France vs Germany. Shape of the Teams

As competitive as this clash might seem by name, it remains a friendly encounter. However, it sparks the debate of what type of opponent big soccer nations should face in Friendlies, which are often deemed useless.

Interestingly, these two European superpowers already faced each other in an International Friendly back in September. This game resulted, against the odds, in a 2-1 victory for Germany. Both countries qualified easily, with Germany being the host country (and therefore de-facto qualifying), while France effortlessly topped an easy group.

Unfortunately, when one would expect soccer to be the main topic, it isn’t.

The French FA (FFF) declared that it would not be lenient when it comes to Ramadan observance. The country’s stance is nothing new, considering the ban on the burqa a few years ago, in a further attempt to use Islamophobia as a political tool following the terrorist attacks claimed by ISIS members back in the mid-2010s.

But Islamophobia is still very much a real threat, with Benzema being blamed last year for being part of ‘The Muslim Brotherhood’ and other conspiracy theories aired live on TV. But to return to soccer, for France this is the last preparation match before the Euros, besides the encounter vs Chile, three days later.

On the German side, the major news remains the return of Real Madrid star Toni Kroos, who could potentially change the team dynamics. Germany does not have any players with a profile similar to his, and it could mark the return of a more stable 4-2-2-2 formation, reminiscent of Nagelsmann’s RB Leipzig days.

It remains unclear who will be Kroos’ partner and this match is a true test for Germany. It will show whether the DFB has learned from the past years, where it only has been a shadow of its former self, or that they can compete with the big nations in the EUROs.

Expectations might lean toward a French victory despite the absence of the injured Antoine Griezmann, who will be replaced by Guendouzi. Griezmann’s performance has been key to France’s success in the past years, including their deep run in the 2022 World Cup.

However, the depth of the French squad also suggests that they are well-equipped to deal with this loss.

Germany’s ongoing defensive woes and lack of a #9 have been challenges for years.  Hansi Flick wasn’t able to solve them, and it looks unlikely that Julian Nagelsmann will. The DFB has had troubles in both areas and while I can think of a few fixes in the defence, finding the solution in the attack is not as easy.

Ideally, it would mean using wingers, like Sané and Gnabry, and the advanced midfielders as tools, but France’s status means it will never be easy to breach their defence, especially given their insane squad depth.

Germany might have won the last encounter, but whether in the friendlies or elsewhere, the team’s post-World Cup form is rather worrying. It was preceded by a disastrous performance in the most important tournament in the World.

Fortunately for Germany, with all due respect to their opponents, their group with Hungary, Scotland and Switzerland is fairly easy – but by no means can they relax.

France vs Germany Betting Tip

It’s a lazy bet, but the logic is clear. Mbappé, with his blistering speed and precise runs, is the perfect tool against a defence that has not had a decent rest defence in years.

However, the question remains: who will partner with him upfront? Warren Zaire Emery has been making waves at Paris Saint-Germain throughout the season, but Deschamps might prefer a more experienced, conservative option given the opponent’s status.
