To fans not deeply versed in the nuances of Spanish football, this seems like an obvious win for Real Madrid against recent La Liga entrant Girona. But this clash is as eagerly anticipated for the connoisseur as any Madrid Derby.

Girona has been one of La Liga’s main attractions this season, employing no superstars but instead creating them. Sure, critics claim it’s all thanks to the links with the City Football Group, but this does diminish the fact that the average fan loves Girona’s style of play. 

Real Madrid always brings excitement to the pitch, but Girona has brought a breath of fresh air. They have challenged the notion that only teams with stout defences can compete at the top. But if a team outscores 80% of the teams it faces, it wins. 

Girona sits just two points shy of league-leading Real Madrid. This makes that the stakes for their upcoming encounter couldn’t be higher. While Real Madrid came out as the winner in their most recent clash, Girona has only grown stronger since then. 

Madrid’s defence hasn’t been in its most formidable form. First goalkeeper Courtois is sidelined, but his replacement, Andriy Lunin, has shown that he can be a worthy replacement. 

On the brighter side for the Catalans, Ukrainian sensation Artem Dovbyk is making his comeback. He is aiming at the top scorer’s title in La Liga (known as Pichichi) alongside Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham. 

Dovbyk, a steal at under €10 million, combines his formidable physical presence with skill. This makes him a certified threat to Real Madrid. Especially when coupled with Savio’s deliveries and former Real Madrid youth product Miguel Gutiérrez.

But we’re talking about playing at the Bernabeu. A fortress where few teams, other than Atlético, have managed to find a chink in Real Madrid’s armour. 

With Bellingham at the helm, Madrid will be eager to capitalize on any slip-ups, especially with the Champions League Round of 16 clash against RB Leipzig on the horizon. The team selection for this game will be crucial for Madrid, as Ancelotti is trying to navigate the congested fixture list without exhausting his most important players.

Girona doesn’t have any European commitments, which explains why they benefit from a fully fit squad.

Yet, their performance in 2024 has dipped compared to the end of last year. Girona were nullified in Donostia (0-0) against Real Sociedad, complicated things with a tight 1-0 win over Celta, and secured a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph in the Copa del Rey against Mallorca.

To add insult to injury, the suspensions of Daley Blind and, more importantly, Yangel Herrera certainly complicate Girona’s setup. Michel’s own suspension from a sideline altercation with the referee further complicates things. This means he won’t be able to oversee the match as he normally would.

However, the valuable midfield duo of Aleix García and Ivan Martín stand ready to fill Herrera’s shoes in midfield, offering a glimmer of hope. 

Girona’s strategy often revolves around scoring early and maintaining pressure to prevent progression. But how does that work against the most confident team in La Liga? 

With Tchouaméni likely shifting to a center-back role, Girona will be looking to exploit this adjustment. This strategy of relying on exploiting uncertainties in their opponents’ lineup has been the running pattern of their success thus far in the season.

Predicting the first scorer in a clash between Bellingham and Dovbyk, both at 14 goals in La Liga, is like navigating the unpredictability of the stock market. 

But what’s for sure is that once the first goal is scored, we can expect Girona to show its full potential. They will press high and take risks, a game plan they have displayed throughout this entire season. 

Positioned comfortably in second, they’ve defied everyone’s expectations. However,  Daley Blind’s absence will cause challenges to their usual build-up play. The Dutchman is essential to Girona’s play with the ball, which will become visible as we will likely see Real Madrid apply pressure.

Michel’s absence from the bench means he won’t get to make the crucial in-game adjustments that have led to the team’s better performance in the second half. Instead, Girona will need to rely on player adaptability.  Even though this seems challenging, there’s a sense that Girona’s squad can rise to the occasion.

A victory against Real Madrid is a tall order. Especially when we recall the 3-0 defeat earlier in the season when Girona was still discovering its Thanos-like superpowers. 

But we must remember that the team that recently dominated Barcelona and Atlético Madrid is a different Girona. And they seem ready to test their mettle against the league’s top contender.
