RB Leipzig vs Real Madrid. Shape of the Teams

RB Leipzig is not the team it used to be under Nagelsmann – and this is their worst position in years, finding themselves in an unusual fifth place in the Bundesliga. More importantly, the Red Bulls have failed to win most of their games against top-tier teams. This has resulted in a series of disappointing results, including three back-to-back defeats.

In fact, Leipzig has only won one game out of five in 2024 so far, with narrow defeats to Eintracht Frankfurt (0-1) and Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen (2-3) while suffering a heavy loss to Stuttgart (2-5). Although they won against a struggling Union Berlin (2-0), they again dropped points against Augsburg (2-2).

Looking at their recent form and the challenges Leipzig are facing, it’s not surprising that the betting odds are not in their favour despite the home advantage.

Real Madrid is crushing it at home, distancing themselves from their only opposition, Girona, following a 4-0 victory.

Earlier in the season, Real Madrid had already hammered Girona at Estadi Montilivi (3-0), underscoring the significant gap between Real Madrid and the rest of the Spanish league.

This currently puts Ancelotti’s team five points ahead of Girona and ten points clear of third-placed Barcelona, which also dropped points against Granada (3-3) in their last game.

This achievement is all the more remarkable considering the injury woes that plagued Ancelotti’s season. It started with goalkeeper Courtois being sidelined for an extended period, followed by the injuries of David Alaba and Éder Militão.

The injury situation led to Ancelotti deploying Aurélien Tchouaméni and Dani Carvajal as makeshift “center-backs” in their most recent match.

RB Leipzig vs Real Madrid Prediction, Odds

While it is true that German teams have historically been Spain’s Achilles Heel in Europe, the upcoming match should lean in Real Madrid’s favour.

RB Leipzig has never been in worse form in the past years, while Real Madrid has been dominant in La Liga. A 4-0 victory against Girona has eased the injury concerns, and more importantly, the second tie of the RO16 will be at the Bernabeu. And Madrid previously secured a 2-0 victory in a solid display, adding to their advantage.

But one thing could offer Leipzig a glimmer of hope – the injury of Jude Bellingham.

The Englishman suffered a sprained ankle in the match against Girona that will keep him off the pitch for this clash. Fans got to see what a Bellingham-less Madrid looked like in the 2-1 victory against Las Palmas, but of course, this was against a lesser opponent.

Leipzig does indeed have two powerful forwards in Openda and Šeško. But without the support from midfield, they have shown that they cannot change the game by themselves.

This becomes a critical factor against a team like Real Madrid, where Toni Kroos, serving as the team’s orchestrator, continues to be a pivotal figure for Madrid with his precise passing.

The question remains – how will Leipzig deal with this? Their backline has been exceptionally weak, and the midfield has failed to achieve the type of performance fans have come to expect from the Red Bull team at home.

Despite their success in European play, this is where the difficulties begin – which is why it is hard to see Leipzig win this tie despite Jude Bellingham’s absence.

Leipzig vs Real Madrid Betting Tip

Besides Toni Kroos, one player stands out to me as the absolute leader of the team: Brazilian superstar Vinícius Júnior

Despite a shaky start to the season and battling through injuries, the Brazilian has hit a form that underscores his critical role in Madrid’s attack. And when he’s in the mood, he becomes an unleashed demon.

Girona’s Yan Couto learned it the hard way, leaving the pitch in tears after being completely dominated by Vinícius Jr.

Vinícius Jr. has shown great synergy with Jude Bellingham – together, they become major forces that are almost impossible to stop. But even in the English midfielder’s absence, Vinícius has proven his capability to lead the line with exceptional flair and effectiveness.

His dribbling has always been there, but his end product, and especially his passing, has improved recently, making him more creative than ever. This marks a significant leap in the Brazilian’s development as a complete forward.

RB Leipzig’s best defender is Lukeba, a right center-back. However, Vinícius Jr. is on the other side, expectedly facing Heinrichs. While he’s been playing solid in the Bundesliga, he is no match for Vinícius.

Another reason to believe Vinícius might be the man of the evening is the recent form of Ferland Mendy, who has tremendously improved offensively – while remaining rock-solid defensively.

For all these reasons, I believe it is more than fair to see Vinícius Jr. scoring at least one goal – especially if Rodrygo picks up his Champions League form – two genuine superstars up front will be just too much to handle for Leipzig.
