Toronto FC vs Atlanta United, Shape of the Teams

Toronto FC returns home to welcome Atlanta United in an early-season tussle between two sides that have commenced the new campaign quite well.

Having kept three clean sheets in their opening three games, Toronto FC conceded twice in their last game – a 2-1 defeat at New York City FC – in what was their first loss of the season.

The Reds will look to return to winning ways as they face an Atlanta United side that has won its last two outings, the most recent win being a 2-0 scoreline at home to Orlando City last weekend.

Toronto FC has played in a 3-4-2-1 formation under head coach John Herdman, with Lorenzo Insigne being the key man for the Reds. The Italian scored two of their four goals in both victories this term.

Toronto can be quite indecisive in front of goal, struggling to create significant chances. Their 3.0 xG is proof of that, as although they are defensively solid, they create few chances.

Atlanta United has not had problems finding the goal so far, with Greek attacker Giorgos Giakoumakis scoring the joint-most goals in the league (4). They have done a good job in finishing their chances, stemming from their patience in building up.

Sticking to a 4-2-3-1 formation, much of the play goes through Argentinian U23 international Thiago Almada, who has a goal and an assist to his name this campaign. The attacking midfielder is tipped for a promising future and is a key player to keep an eye out for.

Toronto FC and Atlanta have been defensively solid, having conceded twice each. Toronto scored in their only other home match this term, a 1-0 success over Charlotte. Conversely, Atlanta failed to score in their sole away game thus far, which was a 1-0 reverse to Columbus Crew on the opening weekend.

Toronto FC has a few players out through injury, with five players sidelined and three questionable. The absence of Captain Jonathan Osorio due to a hip injury will be a big loss for the Reds. Atlanta is currently fully healthy, allowing coach Gonzalo Pineda to choose from his best 11.
