Both the Penguins and Oilers are in dire need of a win in this matchup, as both teams are coming off a loss the last time out. The Penguins suffered a 5-4 overtime defeat against the Utah Mammoth, their fourth OT loss across their last five games, while the Oilers lost to the Canadiens, 4-1, in the midst of their ongoing road trip.

Despite playing away from home, the Oilers should be considered massive favourites for this one. 

The defeat against the Canadiens snapped a brief two-game winning run, but Edmonton have improved of late and have won six of their last 10 regular-season contests (W6, L3, OT1). 

Meanwhile, the loss to the Mammoth extended Pittsburgh’s ongoing losing streak to five games.

Adding insult to injury, the Penguins are riding a five-game home losing streak while dropping eight of their last 10 at PPG Paints Arena (W2, L4, OT4). The Oilers have won in four of their previous five trips to this venue as well, with the last three wins coming in regulation. 

Considering how strong Edmonton are offensively and how porous Pittsburgh have looked defensively, the Oilers should have enough in them to walk away with the victory.

Considering all the issues the Penguins have had defensively in recent games, it’s easy to see McDavid having another excellent performance. The star playmaker is having another dominant season and looks on pace to lead the league in points once again. 

That’s not an oddity, as McDavid has reached the 100-point plateau in each of the last five seasons, as well as in eight of the previous nine.

His recent form also suggests he should be in line for a productive outing. Penguins’ issues aside, McDavid has been scorching hot of late and has cracked the scoresheet in all but one of the Oilers’ previous 10 games, tallying 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in that stretch. 

With five multi-point games in his ongoing six-game point streak, McDavid could have a favorable matchup to crack the scoresheet multiple times again. He has 38 points (15 goals, 23 assists) while seeing 23.1 percent of his shots find the back of the net in 21 contests since the beginning of November. 

His elite production has been consistent all season long.

The Oilers are widely expected to win this game, and there are plenty of reasons to believe they should come away with the victory against a struggling Penguins team. 

That said, a smart move to protect the parlay would be to include overtime as part of the game’s outcome. After all, four of the Penguins’ last five games, and three of their previous four at home, have needed this outcome.

The Oilers should score multiple times as well, and the line of over 2.5 goals for Edmonton looks attractive. Despite playing away from home, it’s worth noting that the Oilers have scored three or more goals in five of their last six contests. 

That includes scoring nine past the Seattle Kraken, six past the Winnipeg Jets and six past the Toronto Maple Leafs over that span.

If the Oilers are on a groove offensively, expect McDavid to be heavily involved. The star playmaker is riding a six-game point streak where he’s notched 16 points overall (seven goals, nine assists). He’s scored three times in that span as well, so he’s a good bet to find the back of the net.

The Penguins could see the debuts of Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak after they were acquired via trade from the Oilers on Dec. 12. The list of injuries is lengthy, though.

Evgeni Malkin (upper body), Caleb Jones (lower body) and Blake Lizotte (upper body) are out for the time being. Tanner Howe (knee), Harrison Brunicke (not injury related) and Filip Hallander (leg) are all out until January at the earliest.

Noah Philp (upper body) is back in practice and could return Tuesday. Connor Clattenburg (eye), however, won’t be ready for this meeting. 

Kasperi Kapanen (upper body), Jack Roslovic (undisclosed) and Jake Walman (lower body) are all out until next week at the earliest.
