The Edmonton Oilers have been one of the more disappointing clubs in the Western Conference this season when comparing their results to their level of talent. One would expect a squad led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to be among the leaders in the standings. 

However, more than 20 games into the 2025-26 NHL regular season, that couldn’t be any further from the truth.

Even though the Oilers’ record of W11, L11, OT5 is underwhelming, their 4-0 win over the Kraken last week should give them enough confidence to believe they can repeat the outcome. A W5, L4, OT1 shows Edmonton might be slowly moving in the right direction, but the team won’t compete for a playoff berth until they address their defensive woes. 

They’ve allowed 96 goals so far, the second-worst mark in the Western Conference, only ahead of the Vancouver Canucks.

Luckily for the Oilers, they’ll be at home, where they’ve gone W5, L3, OT2 this season, and against a Kraken side that has won just five of 12 road outings in 2025-26 (W5, L4, OT3). 

The U.S. outfit have lost three games in a row and have failed to score in two of them, including their recent loss to the Oilers. Edmonton seem to have Seattle’s number, so expect them to take advantage of their opponents’ struggles to secure the victory.

Few players in the NHL are as decisive as McDavid, and the star playmaker should find plenty of opportunities to produce at home against a Kraken team trending in the wrong direction. 

McDavid already notched two points (one goal, one assist) in Edmonton’s 4-0 win over Seattle on Nov. 29. Expect him to be a dominant presence on offence again.

McDavid has proven to be an unstoppable force against any opponent in the NHL, and the Kraken shouldn’t be any different. He’s among the league leaders in points, where he’s tied for fourth with 36, and second in assists with 26. 

The star playmaker should continue his recent strong run with points in four of his last six games, including two multi-point performances.

The Oilers are the favourites to get the win based on talent alone. The presence of McDavid as the primary scoring weapon gives Edmonton a strong advantage against almost any defence in the league, and the Kraken shouldn’t be any different. 

Plus, Seattle have lost three in a row, and since one of those defeats came against the Oilers, the Canadian side could have a psychological advantage as well.

McDavid is expected to lead the way for Edmonton on offence, and he could be a good bet to score at any point in the game. The star playmaker has four goals in his last 10 outings, and with 12 points over that span, he should have plenty of opportunities to crack the scoresheet. 

McDavid’s ability to find gaps on opposing defences is second to none in the NHL. The Kraken will have a hard time stopping him.

From a goal-related perspective, six of Seattle’s last eight encounters have produced five or more. That mark has been hit in six of Edmonton’s last nine, though not in the previous two. The Oilers are too talented to continue struggling on offence, so that low-scoring streak should end in what figures to be a favourable matchup for them on paper.

The Oilers will be without four players. The list includes Kasperi Kapanen (lower body), Noah Philp (upper body), Jack Roslovic (undisclosed), and Jake Walman (undisclosed). Walman is the only one who has a concrete chance of returning to the ice soon, but Thursday’s clash will come too soon for him.

Brandon Montour (undisclosed) is a game-time call for Thursday and might be back in the mix. However, Mason Marchment won’t be ready to return while working his way back from an undisclosed injury.

Max McCormick (hip), Matt Murray (lower body), and Jaden Schwartz (lower body) are all out for Seattle. None will return before Christmas.
