Sheffield United vs Chelsea. Shape of the Teams

Predicting Chelsea is becoming increasingly harder – and the current form indicates it won’t get any easier. The Blues won in the dying minutes of their game against Manchester United (4-3) with two penalties and a decisive strike by Cole Palmer.

However, these goals were the only highlights in a match where defensive solidity was absent. Chelsea’s defensive woes seem to persist, with little hope for immediate improvement.

Despite this trajectory, Chelsea has historically thrived against Sheffield United. The last encounter, in December, ended in a 2-0 victory for Chelsea.

A recurring theme across their last four encounters has been Sheffield’s inability to stop Chelsea’s offensive pressure. Nonetheless, Chelsea has been very inconsistent and prone to losing points, as seen against Burnley (2-2).

Chelsea’s lack of defensive organization is best portrayed through their failure to secure clean sheets, with the last one coming in January against Aston Villa in the FA Cup (0-0).

Looking at the current record reveals a troubling trend: Chelsea has consistently conceded at least two goals per game in their last six games.

Sheffield, on the other hand, has little to be cocky about, with only two wins in the League since December. With a mere 15 points in April, Sheffield is languishing at the bottom of the table with one of the worst relegation records.

Sheffield United vs Chelsea, Prediction, Odds

There are always incredibly one-sided games, simply as a consequence of the difference in individual and coaching quality.

Despite the looming questions over the continuation of Pochettino’s managerial tenure, Chelsea usually ace these games pretty well because teams like Sheffield are too careless when they defend without the ball.

In times when players like Cole Palmer are finding their footing, exploiting the half-spaces becomes less of an art and more of a routine.

Sheffield United’s defensive approach, characterized by a preference for passivity, unwittingly opens the floodgates to domination by more dynamic teams. Their attempt to stifle the opposition often results in their own undoing, as they concede control and invite pressure upon themselves.

Against Liverpool, Sheffield fielded a three-at-the-back system, which was not even close to working out. There were massive leaks in transitions, and if they’ll be playing the transition game this time, Chelsea will take it home.

With speed and agility in their ranks, the Blues would be more than happy to find a ping-pong game to their advantage. Chelsea usually fields rapid attackers such as Jackson, Palmer, and Mudryk. And with the support of Gallagher, The Blues would easily have a 4v3 situation that would help them overcome the backline of the hosts.

Malo Gusto’s involvement from the flanks could also be essential in the match against Sheffield. His ability to widen the game is crucial. It can lead to two significant advantages: directly by creating scoring chances from wide positions through overlaps or indirectly by drawing defenders out, thereby opening up space for teammates in central areas.

Malo Gusto left the match injured against Burnley but featured again against Manchester United.

Sheffield United vs Chelsea Betting Tip

While much of the spotlight has rightly been cast on Cole Palmer, a special mention should also be given to Conor Gallagher’s season, who contributed to the game’s score against Manchester United.

Throughout the season, he’s shown to be a reliable box-to-box player. He assists across all phases of play – from initiating build-ups to directly contributing to goals.

Gallagher has been fielded up high in recent weeks, which explains his increased involvement in the final third. If he continues to develop himself as a sharpshooter – he could quickly become a long-shot specialist and score against Sheffield United, where midfielders like him could be pivotal for the outcome.

Conor is one of those profiles that oscillates between the lines, appearing where least expected – and before you know it, he will find the shot.

Work between the lines is even more important for teams like Chelsea that are relatively clueless up front and  seeing him score on Sunday would be no surprise.
