Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona will face each other in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, which is a great opportunity to look into the common past of both clubs. 

‘La Remontada’ (The Comeback) in 2017, which saw Luis Enrique’s Barcelona crush Emery’s Paris Saint-Germain, shocked the world. After so many years, Sergi Roberto remains one of the few players who participated in that historical match and is still active for Barça. Similarly, Enrique’s open affection for Barcelona underscores a deep-rooted loyalty shared by individuals connected to the club.

And then, there’s Ousmane Dembélé. A symbol of the lavish spending during the Bartomeu era, the Frenchman never adapted to the Catalan lifestyle. Xavi Hernández gave him the spotlight as a future star, and he came only close – only to leave at the last moment for Paris Saint-Germain. Dembélé will probably start against his ex-club, and his reception will likely be a mixture of intrigue and emotion.

PSG’s Achilles’ heel seems to persist – they are unbeatable at home but have mixed results abroad. Still, their last defeat was in November against AC Milan and they did manage to win their most recent away match in the previous round of the UCL against Real Sociedad (1-2). 

However, Clermont stopped them last weekend in a 1-1 draw, a reminder that overconfidence can be a killer – especially in the unforgiving Champions League.

Enrique’s beef with Mbappé has seen the superstar benched multiple times, provoking the indignation of local media (RMC Foot, L’Équipe). 

Barcelona’s side has been on an extended period of rest – perhaps too much rest. Nine days of rest are plenty for the team to feel rejuvenated, but it could also backfire and make the players feel rusty.

For Barcelona, it is all about making Xavi proud – he is probably managing his last games on the bench after he indicated that he would leave the club after the end of the season. The Catalans have not been beaten in a hot minute – their last defeat was against Marcelino’s Villarreal in late January (3-5).

Many things have changed for both sides since their last encounter. Yet Kylian Mbappé remains PSG’s main threat even after Neymar Jr. and Lionel Messi have moved on. 

Ousmane Dembélé and Barcola will accompany Mbappé, and this alone constitutes a majority of Paris’ threats. This killer combo has proven highly effective in European games, which was evident against Real Sociedad despite a rather weak midfield.

With Hakimi suspended, Zaire Emery will likely play right back instead of midfield, while the Vitinha-Ugarte-Ruiz trio is predicted to start. This reshuffling might just be the chink in PSG’s armour that Barcelona is looking to exploit.

Although Barcelona’s defence is not as solid as in the previous campaign, the midfield looks more appealing, with Christensen starting next to Gündogan. Frenkie de Jong and Pedri’s participation remains uncertain, as they have been included in the squad but still await medical clearance.

However, PSG does not boast a great defence either – and this becomes a problem when the backline is tested against the underage Lamine Yamal. Depsite still being a teenager, Yamal has taken Europe by storm.

Barcelona will be under pressure but is unlikely to go all-in at the Parc des Princes. Instead, they will prefer to limit the score and wait for the decisive second leg at home to blast Paris open.

A major question is whether Barcelona will play a high line. The rise of Pau Cubarsí at the back has changed the spirits, with the seventeen-year-old showing great performances that allowed the team to advance deeper in the enemy’s trenches. 

At the same time, however, many fans deem a high line against the likes of Mbappé and Dembélé too risky. The decision boils down to opting for a high-risk, high-reward approach versus a more conservative, calm setup.

Kylian Mbappé to score is far from an ambitious bet, but it is a relatively safe one. The likelihood of Mbappé finding the net appears more a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if.’

Away from home, Xavi’s Barcelona has struggled to replicate the defensive capacity it shows at home, especially in La Liga. With Mbappé coupled with two excellent dribblers, his interchanging positions between the wings and central zones will likely provoke trouble for Barcelona, especially with Baldé’s absence. 

While Koundé is more solid, the left wing with Cancelo will be a target for the French forward line, which likely ends up in Mbappé scoring.

However, we should not underestimate Pau Cubarsí. Despite his tender years, he held his own against Napoli’s Osimhen, who, in theory, should have dominated the Barcelona debutant. 

Coupled with Araújo and provided that Barcelona maintains its composure, Mbappé can be kept at bay. But a single slip is all it takes for Mbappé to turn the tide; the running Frenchman won’t forgive any errors.
