On Saturday, we will perhaps see the most important match of the Bundesliga, where the two leaders of the league will face off. In their first meeting, Leverkusen managed to snatch a draw against Bayern in the fourth minute of the extra time.

Xabi Alonso’s side have emerged as an unexpected powerhouse in Europe. Leverkusen boasts an impressive unbeaten streak across 30 matches — a feat unmatched in German football history. 

They currently lead the Bundesliga with 16 wins and four draws, reached the Europa League playoffs and made it to the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal, beating Stuttgart 3-2 after trailing 1-2.

On the other side, Thomas Tuchel’s team burst into 2024 with a resounding 3-0 victory against Hoffenheim. However, a recent 0-1 loss to Werder—their first in 15 years against them—and a tight 1-0 win over Union hint at vulnerabilities. This will be one of the rare cases in which Bayern will not arrive as the favourites against the opposing side.

Bayern have dominated the Bundesliga by winning the title 11 times in a row. However, this campaign has been different, largely due to Leverkusen’s extraordinary performance. Despite the Rekordmeister briefly claiming the top spot, they couldn’t hold their position against a relentless Leverkusen side.

Thomas Tuchel still hasn’t been able to establish his defensive play, especially when shifting gears from offence to defence. Bayern’s defenders often make gross errors in their positioning, allowing opponents to capitalize and score easily against Tuchel’s team on occasion.

The arrival of Eric Dier, who has often let Tottenham down in recent years, has not improved Bayern’s defence.

At the same time, Bayern’s attacking play is unstable, alternating between phases of brilliance and periods of uninspired attacking play.

This Saturday, they will have the opportunity to regain first place, yet the obstacles loom large. Leverkusen’s remarkable form is not the only problem for Bayern, as Thomas Tuchel is surely concerned about the injury list plaguing his team. Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, and Konrad Laimer are all sidelined for this clash.

Bayer looks like a more organized team with a clear structure in defence and attack. Xabi Alonso’s team excels in dominating their opponents through pressing and counter-pressing tactics. 

Offensively, Bayer uses many clever maneuvers and original ideas in the final third, while the team is excellent at progressing the ball from their own territory to the opposition’s through precise short passes. 

But Bayern boasts a much stronger squad in terms of individual talent. And if Tuchel’s team unleashes their full potential, Leverkusen will have a tough time in this match.

However I think that Leverkusen are in a more favourable position. The support from the BayArena, as well as Leverkusen’s formidable form gives Xabi Alonso’s men an edge. It might seem unexpected, but in my opinion, we will see a tactical battle between the two head coaches, likely with few goals.

Given Leverkusen’s robust defense, even without Odilon Kossounou, and their mere six goals conceded in ten games, it’s reasonable to expect a tight contest. My pick for this encounter will be under 2.5 goals.

Leverkusen have a real chance this season to finally get rid of the “Neverkusen” tag, notorious for their title chase slip-ups. 

In an ironic twist, Bayern’s 11-year hegemony in the Bundesliga is at risk right after Harry Kane moved to the Allianz Arena. The Englishman forward has not yet won a single trophy in his career and left Tottenham to fix this. 

I think that for his part, Kane will do everything possible against Leverkusen. He has been a standout with 24 goals scored in the Bundesliga. He is perhaps the only player from Thomas Tuchel’s entire squad who doesn’t raise any complaints.

The driving force of Bayern’s attack will be especially motivated this coming weekend and will definitely look for an opportunity to score.
