Arsenal FC vs Bayern Munich. Shape of the Teams

Arsenal’s last deep run in the Champions League dates back to the times of Arsène Wenger. Many still remember how Bayern dunked on the English club (5-1) the last time they met in the Champions League.

Securing a spot in the Champions League after years was a triumph in itself, but the Gunners ended up in the tougher half of the draw. If they proceed to the semi-finals, they will face the winner of Real Madrid vs Manchester City.

Despite Munich being a European giant, Arsenal is the clear favourite to progress this year. The Gunners have only suffered one loss in the last ten games, a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of the previous UCL round against Porto. Manchester City was the only team in the Premier League able to halt the Gunners with a goalless draw.

The same cannot be said about Bayern Munich, who are seemingly going through an institutional crisis. A few months ago the club already announced that head coach Thomas Tuchel will not continue beyond the summer. Since then, things have gone from bad to worse.

Bayern has just suffered two defeats in a row. Last weekend, they lost against the just-promoted Heidenheim (3-2) and a week before that against Borussia Dortmund (0-2), while fans can still vividly remember the defeat against Leverkusen (3-0).

To make matters worse, Aleksandar Pavlović will not be available for the clash due to injury. Other players, such as Manuel Neuer, Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané, and Noussair Mazraoui, are doubtful for the game against Arsenal.

This is in stark contrast with Arsenal, who flew past Brighton with an easy 3-0 victory. The Gunners have only one injury case in their squad: Jurrien Timber, who is out for the entire season due to an ACL.

The absence of Aleksandar Pavlović makes things a lot easier for Arsenal. Bayern Munich’s weakness since Thiago’s departure to Liverpool has always been too many transitions and low press resistance. Pavlović’s inclusion this season has seen the German side a little more stable, acting in a double-pivot.

On the other hand, Arsenal’s best trait is precisely out-of-possession shapes. They have been one of the most intense sides when it comes to pressing and covering distances, and this is precisely what Bayern has lacked under Tuchel’s reign.

Due to Pavlović’s absence, Joshua Kimmich might see his role shift from an old-school right-back to the midfield, but without an ideal partner. Mikel Arteta will undoubtedly be looking to exploit this and utilize it to his advantage.

However, Bayern are far from toothless. Harry Kane has been in formidable form all season, and Jamal Musiala’s rise has led the team to impressive performances in possession.

But against Saliba and Gabriel, and especially with Rice and Jorginho, Bayern will have to be more disciplined up front and stay clear of defensive lapses. Clean sheets have become rare for Bayern, and the forward line cannot keep up with the lack of concentration at the back.

Alphonso Davies’s pace could be Bayern’s wildcard. Despite not reaching the level he displayed in previous seasons, his outstanding pace and acceleration would be a major advantage in 1v1 situations and could distract Arsenal from Harry Kane’s presence in the box.

However, this is unlikely to be enough, as Tuchel’s press conferences in the past weeks have been deemed outrageous and were often very pessimistic.

If there’s anything Bayern needs, it is the awareness that they are the underdog on Tuesday at the Emirates in a game where leadership is required. So far this season, no clear leader has emerged for Bayern – which is worrying given the club’s history and culture.

A lack of character has been noticeable in all their losses and it is essential to display a better performance to avoid a spanking at the Emirates.

Arsenal FC vs Bayern Munich Betting Tip

Little suggests Bayern could win this clash, especially at the Emirates. The good old times when Arsène Wenger would always lose against Bayern Munich seem a distant memory, and clubs in an institutional crisis rarely do well on Europe’s elite scene.

Arsenal is likely to field Buyako Saka and Kai Havertz, who have arguably become one of the best duos due to a blend of agility and technical prowess. To add insult to injury, Bayern’s defenders lack mobility – such as de Ligt – while Upamecano is error-prone as he has shown throughout this campaign.

Bayern’s main role will be to contain the potential onslaught while hoping to turn the tide in Munich. However, the Germans are far from confident playing away, with two defeats in the last three games.
