Aston Villa vs Bologna Preview and Team News

Aston Villa Team News

Not even the most pessimistic fan could’ve imagined Aston Villa starting the 2025-26 season on such a woeful note. The Midlands club have yet to secure a win in six competitive matches (90 min: D4, L2).

Their latest disappointment came in a 1-1 draw against a Sunderland side that played nearly 60 minutes with 10 men. That means they’ve collected just three points from a possible 15 in the Premier League.

Perhaps the most worrying stat about Villa’s poor start is that they’ve scored a meager two goals across those six fixtures – one by Matty Cash in the EPL and another by Harvey Elliott in the EFL Cup defeat to Brentford. The injuries and summer departures haven’t helped their cause, but this is a team that shouldn’t be struggling so badly in attack.

The first order of business for Unai Emery, who happens to be the most successful manager in Europa League history with four titles, is to get Villa back to winning ways.

But at this point in the season and on a series of subpar performances, any improvement would be a step in the right direction. The unavailability of Youri Tielemans due to injury will only make things more difficult for the Villains.

Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Bologna (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; McGinn, Kamara; Guessand, Rogers, Sancho; Watkins.

Bologna Team News

Bologna haven’t endured the same issues as Villa, but it’s fair to say their campaign hasn’t lived up to expectations either.

They had to come from behind to edge Genoa this past weekend in Serie A, courtesy of a 99th-minute penalty from Riccardo Orsolini. Their W2, L2 record has left much to be desired, particularly since they’ve failed to score in two of those four contests.

The low-scoring tendencies have also been noticeable in Bologna’s matches. Aside from the fact that three of their four encounters have ended with under 2.5 goals, they’ve also limited opponents to an xG of 1.00 or lower on three occasions.

That speaks volumes of their defensive prowess, though that’ll be tested against a Villa side that should offer a more challenging test in terms of intensity.

Boosted by their comeback win over Genoa, the Rossoblù aren’t expected to make too many changes to their starting lineup for this trip to Villa Park. Key winger Riccardo Orsolini, who has netted two of the team’s three goals this season, should be Bologna’s biggest threat in the final third, while goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski will be central to their defensive efforts.

Bologna predicted lineup vs Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Skorupski; De Silvestri, Vitik, Lysaker Heggem, Miranda; Freuler, Moro; Orsolini, Bernardeschi, Domínguez; Castro.

Aston Villa vs Bologna Prediction, Odds

Aston Villa might be the odds-on favourites on paper, but a club with this level of talent can’t be struggling for such a long time. However, their issues are bigger than simply failing to capitalize on scoring chances.

Their subpar defensive display and the lack of creativity in the final metres, as well as the injuries to some key players, such as Youri Tielemans, are all factors that have conspired against them.

Bologna should prove to be a challenging test for the English team based on how good the Italian side have looked on the defensive end this season.

Aston Villa’s scoring woes don’t seem to be close to ending any time soon based on their recent performances, so it’s hard to back them up for a win here. Those struggles, coupled with the Rossoblù’s defensive prowess, deliver value to Bologna being able to avoid defeat in this trip to Villa Park.

Aston Villa vs Bologna Betting Tip

Aston Villa’s attacking woes don’t appear to have an end in sight, and the Villains are far from being a guarantee in front of goal. Even though they’ve found the back of the net in their last two matches, it’s hard to see them penetrating Bologna’s defensive line.

After all, the Italian side have given up only three goals in four Serie A outings and shown solid defensive structure despite their uneven league record

With three of the Rossoblù’s four games producing under 2.5 goals, and the same outcome in five of Villa’s six, another low-scoring affair could be on the cards here. The combination of both teams struggling in attack and Bologna’s defensive approach on the road should reinforce this trend.
