The Panthers haven’t been at their best of late and have lost two of their last three games, including a whopping 9-1 defeat at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes on January 16. 

Their W4, L5 record since the beginning of January is the perfect picture of the ups and downs the team have gone through. Most of the issues have come on the defensive end with 4.0 goals allowed per outing over that nine-game stretch.

The Jets haven’t been at their best, either, but they’re showing signs of turning things around. 

Aside from coming off a 3-1 home win over the St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg have won five of their last seven contests (W5, L1, OT1), with the defeats coming against the Maple Leafs and Blackhawks. 

Home ice has been a strength for the Jets of late, with four wins in their last five encounters at Canada Life Centre (W4, OT1).

Scheifele hasn’t exactly been consistent on a game-to-game basis, but he turned heads with his three points (two goals, one assist) in the win over the Blues. Scheifele has posted multi-point performances in five of his last eight outings as well.

Similar to Scheifele, Verhaeghe has been carrying the Panthers offensively. He’s posted eight points (three goals, five assists) in nine outings since January 1.

The Jets are depleted defensively but have three players who could make their return to action on Thursday: Haydn Fleury (upper body), Colin Miller (knee), and Elias Salomonsson (illness). The lone confirmed absence is Neal Pionk, who continues to deal with a lower-body injury.

The Panthers could have a huge boost on offence in time for this matchup, as star forward Brad Marchand may return from injured reserve after dealing with an undisclosed issue. The same goes for defenceman Niko Mikkola, who’s day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

Meanwhile, Florida remain without Tomas Nosek (knee), Dmitry Kulikov (upper body), Seth Jones (upper body), Jonah Gadjovich (upper body), and Aleksander Barkov (knee). The absences of Jones and Barkov are particularly significant, as both are key players who can make a big difference when they’re on the ice.
