York United FC – Forge FC. Shape of the Teams

The clash between York United FC and Forge FC in the second round of the Canadian Premier League is shaping up to be an exciting match due to both teams’ attacking styles of play. In the four matches they played against each other in the previous season, they played very efficiently, and the same is likely to happen this year.

But before we make any predictions, let’s evaluate the clubs’ play in the first round of the new season.

York United entered the match against Atlético Ottawa with almost an entirely new squad: eight players, including key figures like Osaze De Rosario, Kevin Dos Santos, and their primary goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos, had left the team.

At the same time, the off-season saw the introduction of seven new players, including three talented Mexican internationals: Oswaldo León, Josué Martínez, and Orlando Botello. This marks a fresh start under the new ownership of Game Plan Sports Group.

York played proactively in the match against Atletico, employing intensive pressing while attacking in large numbers. They managed to create great, quick triangular combinations on the flanks.

Forward Brian Wright made impactful runs behind their opponents’ backs, although the team struggled with finishing. Despite Austin Ricci’s opening goal – who combined well with his partners by actively pressing and opening up for striking positions –  he failed to capitalize on two 100% chances.

In the latter stages of the second half, York lost their grip and began to play less intensely. They lost the initiative and conceded two goals after set-pieces, eventually losing the game with a 1-2 score.

Forge FC, on the other hand, also lost some key players during the off-season, including Manjrekar James, Woobens Pacius, Aboubacar Sissoko, and Rezart Rama. It remains to be seen if new players like Daniel Parra and Nana Ampomah will have the same impact as their predecessors.

In Forge’s first-round encounter, they defeated Cavalry FC with a narrow 2-1 victory on their home field. Cavalry FC defended in a 5-4-1 formation in a low defensive block, which made it difficult for Forge to create numerical superiority in the offensive line and stretch the opponent’s defence. Moreover, Bobby Smyrniotis’ team also conceded first in that match.

Trailing initially, they bounced back when Tristan Borges made the difference in the second half. First, he netted a goal in a challenging situation and then set up Beni Badibanga for another. Forge’s individual talent remains exceptional, allowing them to secure victories – even under difficult conditions.

York United FC – Forge FC Main Match Info

York United FC – Forge FC, Prediction, Odds

In the four matches between these teams last season, Forge produced two wins, York one, while the teams concluded their last game with a 3-3 draw.

In one particularly effective clash in August, Forge tactically outmaneuvered York by creating a 5-on-4 advantage in attack. Smyrniotis’ team did a lot of diagonal passing from flank to flank, exploiting the weaknesses of the York fullbacks as much as possible, generating numerous scoring opportunities.

Given York’s ongoing defensive issues on the flanks, Forge will likely employ a similar strategy in their upcoming match against them.

Of course, York may well create significant difficulties for their opponents, but Forge seems to be a complete team, with players who can make the difference in the most challenging situations. Therefore, Forge will probably at least not lose in this matchup.

York United FC – Forge FC Betting Tip

Given the attacking prowess York United and Forge FC bring to the pitch, both teams will likely find the back of the net. It will be most interesting to see how they will try to conduct quick vertical attacks with combinations on the flanks to break down the opposition’s defences.

That being said, York’s defence has undergone significant changes this season, and the back four to fully gel as a cohesive unit – a vulnerability that Forge might be able to exploit.

However, Forge themselves played erratically in defence last season, and they conceded from a set-piece in their season opener against Cavalry.

Considering all of the above – the attacking style of both teams, York’s untested defence, and Forge’s frequent defensive lapses – we can expect a match rich in goals.
