Liverpool vs Manchester City. Shape of the Teams

Anfield and Liverpool vs Manchester City is a Premier League classic. This encounter will go down in history as the final showdown between the two titans in Jürgen Klopp’s era. The German announced that this will be his final season at the helm of Liverpool and that he is going to take a break from soccer.

With Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with a very narrow lead of one point, there are more than enough reasons to believe the boys will give it their all. However, many will still remember the famous season when City denied Liverpool the title by a small margin.

Liverpool come to Anfield confidently, where the Kop’s chorus of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ reverberates intimidatingly, and Liverpool’s morale is sky-high. Fresh off a 5-1 victory in the Europa League against Sparta Prague, there is no question of Liverpool’s fighting spirit or hunger.

Since their last stumble against Arsenal (1-3), Liverpool has been on a goal rampage, netting at least three, sometimes even four, goals in each of their games.

Brimming with confidence and with Alexander-Arnold hitting his stride, there are ample reasons to believe they could indeed make it at Anfield – one of the final hurdles on the way to victory.

The camaraderie yet fierce rivalry between Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp has been a spectacle every Premier League fan cherishes. With Klopp’s nearing departure, it remains a question whether Pep will soon have a rival of a similar calibre, barring his protégé, Mikel Arteta. As such, one wonders if Pep will stay much longer either.

Manchester City might have looked less apt at the beginning of the season. However, they found their groove in true Citizen style come February.

Although their defensive levels are far from their standards, the victory against Copenhagen shows that, yet again, they seem unstoppable – and it’s hard to see anyone defeat them. Fuelled by an on-fire Phil Foden, who has left opponents in disarray, they have bamboozled the opposition.

This prediction might seem like a bold move, but it’s not without rationale. Few teams can keep pace when Pep Guardiola’s team hits their stride. Instinctively, a draw seems reasonable – both teams are in fine form, and their previous 1-1 stalemate at the Etihad left questions unanswered.

However, this was not the time of the year when City had reached their peak season momentum. Neutralizing Phil Foden alone is a daunting challenge in itself – let alone the collective threat posed by City.

While it might feel like an exaggeration, Liverpool’s shortcomings – highlighted by the reliance on Endō as the only pivot as a stop-gap signing despite his commendable performances – are a big handicap.

On their home field, Liverpool are capable of overwhelming any opponent by relentless pressing, a tactic that was on full display in the match against Arsenal in the first part of the season. The anticipated return of Dominik Szoboszlai is set to inject even more vigor into Klopp’s pressing game.

However, Manchester City’s duo of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland pose a huge threat in a 4-4-2 counter-attacking formation. With the possible absence of Ibrahima Konate and the defensive vulnerability of Conor Bradley, Liverpool could have big problems on the right flank of the defense.

On that flank, De Bruyne can open up behind the Liverpool midfielders and pass to Haaland behind the backs of the Merseyside club’s centre-backs.

At the same time, Liverpool are also capable of creating opportunities through rapid vertical assaults, especially with Mohamed Salah’s return. After all, Manchester City have repeatedly failed in transitioning from an attacking 3-2-4-1 to a defensive 4-4-2 formation, as evidenced in recent matches against Chelsea and Manchester United.

Although I know soccer goes further than tactics and beyond predictions on paper, I can’t help that feeling. Yes, the game will be radically different at Anfield, as demonstrated against Chelsea. But in the past years, we’ve seen City capitalize on exactly this part of the season – and I would not be surprised if history repeats.

Pep’s team has done the toughest – they overcame the last games in which they played against teams employing deep defensive strategies, and that seems to be an important detail: mental strength.

Control is a major factor, which leads me to think Liverpool cannot make it – compared to City, it still has too many blind spots.

In such high-stakes encounters, especially with the history between these two teams, I expect Pep will make the wiser decisions – notably remaining risk-averse – potentially tipping the scales in City’s favour.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Betting Tip

Phil Foden’s recent form captures the attention – and rightly so, his performances have been stellar. However, in this game, all eyes should be on Erling Haaland, the striker nobody can really get a hold of.

I’m not writing this because he scored against Copenhagen in their midweek Champions League match but because of his gravitational pull on the pitch, which draws defenders and creates spaces for his teammates like Foden to exploit.

It is important to note that City has been seen completely dominating the opposition, pinning them back and taking advantage of the available space. Against Jürgen Klopp’s high-pressing Liverpool, achieving this level of control will not be possible. However, I do believe that City, spearheaded by the likes of Haaland and Foden, will at least dominate the game.
