Ireland control their own destiny when it comes to securing a berth in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs. However, if they want to have a shot at finishing in second place in Group F, they’ll need to get a positive result here. 

With two fixtures left in the schedule, the Boys in Green trail Hungary by one point, and with the latter playing against Armenia, a scenario where Ireland are eliminated if they don’t win here looks realistic.

Unfortunately, the team can’t rely on their recent results to believe they have a realistic shot at topping the reigning UEFA Nations League runners-up. And based on both teams’ form, it’s hard to imagine any outcome other than a Portugal victory.

That’s because Os Lusos have looked simply unstoppable in recent months. In addition to their unbeaten qualifying campaign, they’ve also gone seven straight games without defeat, a stretch that included meetings with Spain, Germany, and Croatia. 

Furthermore, Portugal have posted a W9, D4, L1 record since the end of the 2024 EURO. They’re one of the hottest sides in Europe right now.

Manager Roberto Martínez didn’t want to take unnecessary risks since they had yet to clinch a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, so he decided to call up a strong squad. The lone notable absences through injury are Chelsea winger Pedro Neto and PSG full-back Nuno Mendes. However, few teams in the world have as much depth as Portugal right now. They should be able to replace both players with ease.

Ireland do have to take the risks since they’re competing with Hungary for second place in Group F. However, they don’t have enough quality to upset their opponents even if they’re playing at home.
