Colorado Rapids vs Sporting Kansas City Preview and Team News

Colorado Rapids Team News

The Rapids had been slumping in recent weeks, enduring a six-game losing streak over an eight-match stretch between May 3 and June 14.

However, the team appear to be regaining some form, going unbeaten in their last two fixtures. Their most recent outing – a 3-3 draw against the New England Revolution – should’ve seen them come out on top, but they were unable to hold a 3-1 lead in the final minutes.

Colorado have been showing encouraging signs at home with three victories out of their last five encounters. The 2-0 win over the Galaxy saw the Rapids hold 31% possession while producing a mere 0.64 xG. They’ve had less of the ball than their opponents in all but one of their last five home contests.

Several absences won’t help Colorado’s chances either. Chidozie Awazem and Reggie Cannon are suspended, while Djordje Mihailovic is a game-time call due to an ankle problem. Cole Bassett and Ali Fadal are doubtful due to ankle and knee injuries, respectively. Zack Steffen isn’t expected to return this season, as he continues to recover from a long-term knee injury.

Colorado Rapids predicted lineup vs Sporting Kansas City (4-4-2): Hansen; Rosenberry, Maxso, Murphy, Vines; Harris, Atencio, Larraz, Ku-DiPietro; Rafael Navarro, Yapi.

Sporting Kansas City Team News

Colorado may be struggling in terms of form and have several absences, but that doesn’t mean Sporting Kansas City have a clear edge ahead of their trip to the Rocky Mountains.

They’re coming off a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake – a result that did little to ease their ongoing struggles – and have won just one of their last four MLS contests.

Aside from a recent 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo, Kansas City’s away performances have been disappointing lately. They’ve won just two of nine matches on enemy soil while posting a lower xG than their rivals in four of their last five.

That tendency to get outplayed is concerning, and the fact that this game will be played at an elevation of 5,000 feet above sea level could further complicate matters.

Zorhan Bassong may be available for selection following Canada’s elimination from the Gold Cup. However, the centre-back is not expected to start in the upcoming clash, according to local media reports.

Additionally, Nemanja Radoja, Dany Rosero, and Robert Voloder have all been sidelined due to injuries and are unlikely to return for this matchup.

Sporting Kansas City predicted lineup vs Colorado Rapids (4-2-3-1): Pulskamp; Shelton, Miller, Joaquín, Ndenbe; Bartlett, Thommy; Suleymanov, Manu García, Salloi; Joveljic.

Colorado Rapids vs Sporting Kansas City Prediction, Odds

The Rapids haven’t been a dominant team at home. Their 2-0 victory over the Galaxy on June 25 snapped a two-game losing skid at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, though they’ve still won three of their last five encounters there.

Given that each of their previous five home matches has seen under 2.5 total goals, another low-scoring affair wouldn’t come as a surprise.

Still, the Rapids are the favourites to get all three points, especially against a Sporting KC side that have been struggling on the road with only one win in their last five away outings.

Colorado Rapids vs Sporting Kansas City Betting Tip

The Rapids enjoyed a fast start in their most recent 2-0 home win over the Galaxy, finding the back of the net twice before the 30th-minute mark. If they want to secure another victory, it wouldn’t hurt to establish the lead early. Four of Colorado’s last five games at home have seen the winning side on top at the end of the first half. We expect that pattern to continue.
