With the return leg taking place in Mexico, Inter Miami will have to prove it can turn matters upside down. The first leg in Florida was a disaster for Miami – they suffered a 1-2 loss while also loosing  David Ruiz with a red card and Taylor due to an injury. 

Their latest MLS game, a 2-2 deadlock against Colorado, did little to bolster their confidence. To make matters even worse, Leo Afonso (who scored) and Campana had to leave the pitch before the final whistle due to injuries. 

This raised the question: What is it with injuries at Inter Miami this season? Some might blame it on a selection full of veterans like Messi and Suarez, but even the young Federico Redondo has been suffering from injuries. 

Inter Miami has no time for more slipups – they have to win in Mexico. An early exit from the CONCACAF would mean failure for Beckham’s ambitious project to make it to the Club’s World Cup with Messi, Alba and Redondo.

Furthermore, after the draw against Colorado, the title dreams are also slipping away as they are now fourth in the standings. 

Things not only look dire for Miami, as Monterrey also navigates through turbulent waters. The Mexicans lost against Cruz Azul in the Liga MX (2-1), a team that is just one place below Monterrey. 

However, the Mexican club’s lure of progressing in the CONCACAF Champions League holds a different appeal. As such, unlike in previous weeks, Inter Miami will need surgical precision in front of the goal.

Thankfully for Inter Miami, Benjamin Cremaschi was spotted warming the bench in the last game – meaning he could potentially feature for this tie.

Inter Miami has all the chances – as Monterrey’s defeats against Cruz Azul and Guadalajara showed, Los Albiazules are far from invincible.  

Inter Miami’s strategist Tata Martino will likely recalibrate his formation. Inter Miami lacked presence in the midfield during the 1-2 defeat in the first leg, which has to be fixed for this matchup. 

Monterrey capitalized on this lack of midfield presence by threading the ball to unmarked men between the lines. Miami’s defence could only watch how they were outplayed. With Ruiz now being unavailable, Tata Martino will need to think twice about the composition of his midfield. 

It is clear that Sergio Busquets will start against Monterrey, probably alongside Gomez. However, the selection for the third midfield spot remains tough to guess. Inter Miami always plays in a 4-3-3 formation, and this third midfielder could change the tie by himself. 

Much of it depends on Campana’s medical condition. After he left the pitch with an injury in the game against Colorado, his participation hangs by a thread.

The midfield’s bolstering is important to relieve the pressure, as Inter Miami has been vulnerable to counter-attacks in recent weeks.

More importantly, it would allow the forwards to be fed more chances, and if both Suarez and Messi are to play – which is likely – this could provide a major boost for a comeback.

However, Messi’s readiness remains uncertain after he entered the pitch as a sub against Colorado.

The main factor will be Messi’s involvement in the game, which could change everything. The more he gets the ball, the likelier it is that the Argentinian either finds one of his teammates – like Jordi Alba or Luis Suarez – or creates a genius strike by himself. 

On nights when everything seems lost, Messi always strikes. This could be one of those nights, and even a free kick could be enough.
