Bulgaria vs Spain Preview and Team News

Bulgaria Team News

Bulgaria will open their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign at home, but they couldn’t have asked for a tougher opponent.

Spain are one of the top candidates not only to qualify in Group E, but to perform a deep run in the tournament next year. As if the strength of the opponent wasn’t enough, the Lions aren’t really equipped to go toe to toe against a mighty opponent like La Furia Roja.

That point becomes even clearer when looking at Bulgaria’s recent record. They finished second in Group 3 of the UEFA Nations League C, which granted them a spot in the playoffs for promotion to League B. Unfortunately, they fell short against Ireland, losing both legs by a 2-1 score, resulting in a 4-2 aggregate defeat. They also went winless in their two friendly matches during the June international window.

Ultimately, Bulgaria have won just two of their previous 10 outings across all competitions, friendlies included (W2, D4, L4). They’re not used to playing against opponents of Spain’s level, with the only top-ranked side they faced during that stretch being Greece (39th).

Expect the Lions to play with a cautious approach, as even a draw would be a good result for them.

Bulgaria predicted lineup vs Spain (4-5-1): Mitov; Nedyalkov, Atanasov, Petkov, Nürnberger; Despodov, Milanov, Chochev, Gruev, Petkov; Minchev.

Spain Team News

Spain will have to endure a grueling trip to Sofia to take on Bulgaria. Yet even with the challenge of travelling nearly 3,000 kilometres, there’s little doubt that La Roja should be massive favourites.

The team reached the UEFA Nations League final in June after defeating France 5-4, though they ultimately fell to Portugal 2-3 in extra time.

Despite the disappointment of losing the final to one of their biggest rivals, Spain should be confident about starting their World Cup qualifying campaign with a positive result.

After all, they’ll be squaring off against an opponent they’ve never lost to in their competitive history (W4, D1). Historical advantage aside, the Spaniards are miles ahead of Bulgaria in terms of both talent and quality.

Confidence should be sky-high for Luis de la Fuente’s side. Excluding extra time and penalties, they’re undefeated in their last 20 games (W14, D6). That form, combined with the fact that they’ll be facing an opponent ranked 82 places below them, should give Spain a sizable boost. Even with some rotation in sight, the gap in class makes La Roja overwhelming favourites on paper.

Spain predicted lineup vs Bulgaria (4-3-3): Unai Simón; Carvajal, Huijsen, Cubarsí, Cucurella; Pedri, Zubimendi, Fabián Ruiz; Yamal, Morata, Williams.

Bulgaria vs Spain Main Match Info

Bulgaria vs Spain Prediction, Odds

There’s a strong possibility of Spain rotating their squad for this game, with a trip to Turkey looming on the horizon before the end of the week.

However, despite the possibility of not fielding their strongest side for this matchup, they’re still expected to cruise to a comfortable victory here. Names such as Dani Carvajal, Álvaro Morata, Rodri, Pedri, or Lamine Yamal should be absolute difference-makers at this level.

With that in mind, Luis de la Fuente should find a way to win by a sizable margin and open their qualifying campaign with three points.

Spain have scored at least two goals in seven straight matches against elite European opponents, so they shouldn’t have issues finding the back of the net early and often against a mid-to-low-level UEFA team.

It’s uncertain if Luis de la Fuente’s men will be able to keep a clean sheet, as they haven’t done that in their previous six outings across all competitions. However, Bulgaria are expected to adopt a defensive approach and offer minimal threat going forward. It could turn into another high-scoring affair based on Spain’s recent track record, and a blowout win for the 2010 FIFA World Cup champions feels very much on the cards.

Bulgaria vs Spain Betting Tip

Spain have recorded four or fewer corners in each of their previous four matches, though they did produce at least six in the three games before against the likes of Serbia, Switzerland, and Denmark. They should be able to generate tons of action in the final third against a defensive-minded side like Bulgaria, which could easily result in a high number of corners for La Roja.

The fact that the Lions have given at least five corners to teams such as Ireland (five) and Cyprus (six) suggests they tend to struggle when attacked. They’re not expected to be able to withstand the intensity of a Spanish forward line that thrives on the wing, with the threat of their attackers being too much for a relatively inexperienced Bulgarian defence.
