Betis have been extremely inconsistent to open the 2025-26 LaLiga season, looking like a dangerous team at times but also showing sluggish stretches where they tend to look overmatched against lesser opponents. It’s no surprise, then, that they’ve won just once in their last four league matches (W1, D2, L1).

During that run, Los Verdiblancos were clearly second-best against Athletic Club and Levante, with the latter game seeing them concede twice in the opening 10 minutes before clawing their way back for a 2-2 draw. They also looked very good in their latest win over Real Sociedad. The question is: which version of Betis will show up in this clash?

Manager Manuel Pellegrini decided to rotate in the win over Real Sociedad, but should field a very strong side this time. The only notable absences are Isco and Ricardo Rodríguez, both sidelined with injuries. A W4, D2, L1 record in their last seven home fixtures dating back to last season could give Betis some confidence, but with the way they’ve been playing defensively, it’s best to exercise caution on their chances.

Nottingham Forest are set to play in a European competition for the first time in 30 years. Though it’s safe to say they’re far from being at their best ahead of this trip to Spain to take on Betis. The Tricky Trees are coming off a 1-1 away draw against Burnley, which extended their winless skid to five matches (D2, L3). It’s hardly the kind of start anyone at the club would’ve imagined.

Forest’s early-season turmoil hasn’t helped. Nuno Espirito Santo left the club due to differences with the board, and Ange Postecoglou, who won the Europa League with Tottenham in 2024-25, took over as his replacement. 

The former Spurs and Celtic manager has yet to win a game with his new team, though that’s understandable since he hasn’t had a lot of time to implement his tactical approach.

Making things even more complicated are mounting absences on the defensive end. Nicolás Domínguez has yet to recover from an injury, while two regular starters at the back, Ola Aina and Murillo, have also been sidelined due to injuries. This means backups such as Nonato and Nicolo Savona will once again be asked to step into key defensive roles.

Betis have delivered some strong performances in the 2025-26 Liga campaign, but consistency has been missing on a game-to-game basis. 

With a W1, D1, L1 record over their last three matches and defensive frailties showing each time, Pellegrini’s side are far from being a dominant force, and that could be exposed against a Premier League opponent.

Nottingham haven’t been at their best either, going winless in their last five outings across all competitions, but their intensity level is something Betis hasn’t really faced in LaLiga so far. 

The Tricky Trees should be able to hold their own in this setting, and while it’s hard to see them getting all three points straight up, they should have enough quality to avoid defeat in their first taste of European action in 30 years.

Betis aren’t exactly a defensive powerhouse, and all but one of their six LaLiga matches this season have ended with both sides on the scoresheet. 

Don’t expect them to keep Nottingham Forest quiet, as the City Ground outfit have scored goals in four of their six games in 2024-25 despite winning just once (W1, D2, L3). Four of those outings also saw both teams finding the net.

Postecoglou’s men may struggle to contain the pace of Antony and Rodrigo Riquelme on the wings, as their defensive shortcomings are likely to be exposed. On the other hand, Betis could have trouble dealing with the physicality of Chris Wood and Dan N’Doye. 

With both clubs carrying enough firepower to inflict damage on the opposing defence, and neither being particularly strong at the back, it’s easy to see both clubs getting on the scoresheet.
