Atlético de Madrid vs Girona FC. Shape of the Teams

If Atlético plans to rob the third spot back from Girona, the time is now. Atlético is fourth with 58 points, trailing Girona by seven points – a gap they’re eager to close.

The second half of the season has proven to be Girona’s Achilles heel; after starting strong, they’ve stumbled, dropping points that could be pivotal in defining Girona’s evolution in the Champions or Europa League.

In the first stretch of the season, Girona managed to topple giants like Barcelona and Valencia, but recently they seem to have lost their momentum.

Girona’s results in recent weeks have been mixed. They secured victories against Real Betis, Osasuna, Rayo Vallecano, and Girona but were defeated by Getafe, Mallorca, Athletic Club, and Real Madrid. This inconsistency makes the match against Atlético a good indicator of the Catalans’ current level.

This will be a fun clash – for the simple reason that Atlético is also a bipolar team. However, the game will be played at the Wanda – Atlético’s fortress.

Atlético has made a major step towards reaching the Champions League semifinals with a 2-1 victory at home against Borussia Dortmund. However, their domestic form has been less inspiring. Atlético lost at home against Barcelona (3-0) and away against Cádiz (2-0) and Athletic Club (3-0).

Overall, their performances have been up to par at their stronghold, the Wanda Metropolitano. And that should probably be enough to set the tone for the match, with Atlético being favoured by the betting odds.

However, Atlético will have to do without key midfielder Pablo Barrios due to a suspension. Girona, on the other hand, faces its own challenges. Iván Martin, a major piece in Girona’s formation, is also suspended for the clash with Atlético, while Tsygankov is doubtful, pending a medical green light.

Atlético de Madrid vs Girona FC, Odds

The last match between these two teams delivered a goal-fest for La Liga aficionados, with a 4-3 thriller lighting up Girona – a spectacle many neutrals enjoyed. However, a repeat performance seems unlikely.

Teams in La Liga and the Champions League find it difficult to cope with the electric atmosphere of the Wanda Metropolitano and struggle to play their usual game.

Much of Girona’s play revolves around confidence, but their string of defeats in the past weeks – coupled with the absence of Iván Martin – could dampen the Catalans’ spirits.

Girona has often seemed out of ideas lately, which is troubling for Artem Dovbyk, who is on the list of the league’s top scorers for the 23/24 season. Dovbyk thrives on creative service and without it, a striker’s life is an uphill battle.

Yet, form might take a backseat as both teams are coming off a two-week hiatus, which could see some players returning with a bit of rust in their game.

Atlético de Madrid will need to find a way to avoid getting caught up in Girona’s up-and-down tactics. Pablo Barrios has become more than important, orchestrating the team’s midfield and often unlocking the game with killer passes. However, in his absence, there is much room for speculation about what the midfield dynamics will look like.

As always, Antoine Griezmann will be expected to provide Los Rojiblancos with the magic potion, though Atlético benefits from a more constrained game, while Girona flourishes when the play is stretched.

Another question is how Atlético will use transitions. They traditionally dominate the wings with wing-backs Riquelme and Lino. This approach provides many creative solutions but comes with the risk of being hit by swift counterattacks.

Girona’s strength lies on the flanks as well, notably with Brazilian superstar Sávio and Spanish prodigy Miguel Gutiérrez.

Given both teams use three-at-the-back defences that are prone to be dismantled through wide overloads, it will be interesting to see who manages to exploit these gaps most effectively.

Atlético de Madrid vs Girona FC Betting Tip

All eyes will be set on Antoine Griezmann – as they always are – but his striking partner Alvaro Morata is rarely mentioned.

It’s important to recall that Alvaro was the main man in Atlético’s last clash with Girona in January, despite the match ending in a 4-3 defeat.

As everyone is focused on Griezmann, many will forget the savvy movements of Alvaro Morata in the box, which are just as important.

With Iván Martin unavailable and David López marshalling Girona’s defence, Morata should look to run into the pockets of free space for several opportunities in the box.
