Neither the Canucks nor the Jets have been reliable this season. However, in this battle of underwhelming squads in the Western Conference, there’s no question that Winnipeg should be considered the favourites, even if they’re playing away from home.

The Jets entered the break on the heels of back-to-back losses, though those defeats were against playoff contenders, the Canadiens and the Stars. Two wins over the last five games showed some kind of improvement for a Winnipeg side that are looking to get back into the Wild Card race in the Western Conference.

Unfortunately, that’s a more complicated task for Vancouver. The Canucks lost three in a row before the Olympic break. 

They’ve also dropped eight of their last 10 encounters (W2, L7, OT1) while ranking as the worst defence (3.65 goals allowed) and the fourth-worst attack in the NHL (2.54 goals scored) on a per-game basis. That’s not a combination that’s going to deliver decent results.

It’s hard to trust either team here, but the Jets have shown better results throughout the season and have the better roster, including a difference-maker between the pipes in Connor Hellebuyck. That should be enough to see them as favourites here.

If the Jets are to secure the victory, they’ll need Mark Scheifele to be at his best. He leads the team in scoring this season with 68 points in 56 contests, courtesy of 27 goals and 41 assists. The star playmaker also has seven points amid his current five-game point streak, tallying two goals, five assists, 10 shots, two hits, and four blocked shots over that stretch.

Considering the presence of Hellebuyck between the pipes and the Canucks’ offensive woes throughout the season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Jets cover the -1.5 puck line. Vancouver have suffered three of their last four defeats by two or more goals. 

We’re pairing that puck line with a solid showing from Mark Scheifele, who should be able to hit the scoresheet at some point against the Canucks’ woeful defence amid his current hot stretch of play.

Lastly, we expect this clash to produce plenty of goals. The fact that both teams rank below average defensively should pave the way for a relatively high-scoring affair. Nine of Vancouver’s last 10 games and five of the Jets’ previous six have seen at least five total goals.

The Canucks will be without Kevin Lankinen for this contest, as the netminder has yet to return following his stint with Team Finland in the 2026 Winter Olympics. 

The absence of Lankinen means either Jiri Patera or Nikita Tolopilo will get the nod between the pipes. Patera would be the first choice, as he’s the No. 2 goaltender by default.

Brock Boeser (concussion), Zeev Buium (face), Nils Hoglander (lower body), and Marco Rossi (lower body) are all game-time decisions for Wednesday’s clash. The list of confirmed absentees doesn’t end there, though. Filip Chytil (face), Guillaume Brisebois (lower body), Derek Forbort (undisclosed), and Thatcher Demko (hip) are all out. Demko has been ruled out for the rest of the 2025-26 season.

The Jets will be missing a key player on the defensive end since Josh Morrissey has been placed on the IR list, meaning he’ll be sidelined for at least the next three games. 

That’s a huge blow for Winnipeg, as Morrissey, who represented Canada in the 2026 Winter Olympics, has compiled 10 goals, 42 points, 104 shots on net, and 94 blocked shots across 56 encounters this season.

The lack of depth on the blueline is even more noticeable, given that several other defencemen could also be out. Haydn Fleury (upper body) and Colin Miller (knee) are game-time calls, but given the lack of progress in their recoveries, both are slated to be out once again. Neal Pionk (lower body) is also expected to be sidelined for this contest.
