The Oilers extended their impressive run of results with a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday, giving them seven wins across their last 10 outings overall (W7, L3). 

It wasn’t their best performance from an offensive standpoint, as they only mustered three goals, but they showed grit to win against a complicated opponent. 

Those victories always matter, and great teams often differentiate themselves from the others by being able to come out on top in those tough, hard-nosed matchups.

The Bruins are on the opposite spectrum, coming off a sixth consecutive defeat after their 2-1 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames on Monday. They’ve mustered just two points during their ongoing six-game losing skid (L4, OT2), and a W3, L5, OT2 record over their last 10 encounters isn’t encouraging at all. 

The main issue for Boston has been an evident lack of firepower, as they’ve failed to score more than two goals in five of their last six defeats.

The Oilers aren’t known for being one of the best defensive teams in the NHL, and even if they’re forced to start a backup netminder due to the absence of Tristan Jarry, they should have enough in them to contain a struggling Boston side. 

Playing at home works in their favour, as Edmonton have won three games in a row at Rogers Place. Led by the star duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers shouldn’t have problems securing the victory.

Connor McDavid saw his goal streak come to an end in Monday’s 3-1 win over the Jets, but the star playmaker still kept his point streak alive with an assist in the third period. 

McDavid has cracked the scoresheet in 13 outings in a row while tallying three goals and 11 points over his last five appearances.

That kind of production not only screams “elite” and “dominance,” but also shows that the Bruins will have a hard time slowing him down. 

McDavid has registered eight goals over his last nine appearances, and with Boston ranking 24th in goals allowed per encounter (3.28), it wouldn’t be surprising if McDavid gets back to his scoring ways. He hasn’t gone back-to-back games without a goal since mid-November.

The Bruins will wait to see whether Tanner Jeannot is available for this contest, as he remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury but is listed day-to-day. Blueliners Jordan Harris (ankle) and Henri Jokiharju (undisclosed) are on injured reserve, but both players are tabbed to return in the early days of January.
