Italy vs Norway Preview and Team News

Italy Team News

Italy opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a disappointing 0-3 away defeat to Norway. However, despite all the criticism the team have endured since that result, they’ve done a good job of bouncing back by winning six straight matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The most recent one was a 2-0 away victory over Moldova, marking their second straight – and fourth overall – clean sheet.

It would be wrong to give Italy too much praise for handling their business and keeping a clean sheet against the likes of Moldova and Israel, though.

The reality is that Gli Azzurri, now under the management of Gennaro Gattuso, are on the verge of playing another playoff round to reach the World Cup. Italy haven’t played in the tournament since Brazil 2014, so making it this time is a must for them, but there’s no realistic path for them to finish first in the Group I standings.

They could theoretically tie Norway for first place with 21 points with a win here, but they hold a plus-12 goal differential compared to Norway’s plus-28. In other words, Italy would have to win by a 14-goal margin to climb into top spot.

Their best and most realistic objective is simply to push for the win here and prepare as best as possible for the upcoming playoffs. The four-time World Cup winners can’t miss another World Cup.

Italy predicted lineup vs Norway (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Mancini, Bastoni, Dimarco; Barella, Locatelli, Tonali; Orsolini, Retegui, Raspadori.

Norway Team News

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Norway have been the best team in Europe during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. England could make a strong claim to earn that nod as well, given their perfect record with no goals conceded. However, Norway’s campaign has been even more impressive since they weren’t the favourites to top the group after the draw.

Unsurprisingly, they’ve built their success on the back of a star-studded attack that’s averaging a whopping 4.71 goals scored per game.

The Scandinavian outfit opened their qualifying campaign with a 5-0 win over Moldova and never looked back, although there’s no doubt that their best result to date has been their 3-0 win over Italy back on June 6. Ståle Solbakken’s men have scored at least four goals in five of their seven matches and at least three in all but one. The lone exception was a 1-0 away win over Estonia on June 9 this year.

Led by Erling Haaland’s elite scoring numbers and supported by a squad with excellent depth in other areas and several players who regularly feature in the best leagues in the world, Norway can’t be overlooked as a dangerous side anymore. Their record tells the whole story, as their last defeat came against Austria in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League (5-1), and they’ve gone W10, D1 across all competitions since then.

Norway predicted lineup vs Italy (4-4-2): Nyland; Ryerson, Ajer, Lysaker Heggem, Wolfe; Bobb, Berge, Berg, Nusa; Haaland, Sørloth.

Italy vs Norway Prediction, Odds

The head-to-head record gives Italy a huge advantage, as they’ve won three of their last five meetings (W3, D1, L1). However, Norway claimed victory in their previous encounter, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they end their qualifying run undefeated and steal at least a point in this trip to San Siro. Italy might be the better side on paper, but it’s hard to see any team in the world stopping Norway’s dangerous attack.

Gli Azzurri will probably go all out on the attack to try and get the win, even though it’s completely unrealistic to expect them to overturn the 14-goal margin required to take top spot in the standings. That attacking approach might leave a few spaces at the back, just like it has in other matches, but Norway have the quality in the final metres to exploit any inch their strikers – mainly Haaland – find.

Italy will be the favourites here, and it wouldn’t be shocking if they secure the victory, given their ongoing six-game winning streak. However, Norway have all the weapons to steal a point as well.

Italy vs Norway Betting Tip

Italy need to go all out on the attack to secure a positive result here, meaning they could leave some spaces at the back. This isn’t the same side that have been historically sound defensively, as evidenced by the four goals they conceded against Israel and the 3-0 defeat against Norway earlier this year. With Solbakken’s squad boasting an elite attack and Italy needing to win at all costs, this could end up being a high-scoring affair with goals at both ends.
