Real Sociedad vs Paris Saint-Germain. Shape of the Teams
In my preview of the first leg, I mentioned the idea that Real Sociedad (RSO) needed to limit the damage at the Parc des Princes to stand a chance. Overcoming a small setback would be more than achievable.
The distinct advantage for the Basques when playing at home cannot be overstated. The fervour and dedication of the local crowd, deeply rooted in Basque identity, inject an extra dimension to their performance.
A one-goal deficit would have been perfectly okay, but a two-goal deficit makes things much harder, especially given that La Real did not score a single goal in Paris.
Real Sociedad’s form typically wanes in January and February, which can be attributed to a mix of injuries and general dips in performance. And this season has been no exception.
Since their match against Paris Saint-Germain, Real Sociedad’s only victory came against Real Mallorca, which is considered one of the weaker teams in La Liga.
La Real then proceeded to lose against Villarreal (1-3), getting knocked out by Mallorca in the penalties for the Spanish Cup semifinal, and lost in an epic clash against Sevilla last weekend (2-3).
The same cannot be said for Paris Saint-Germain – they come confident despite Kylian Mbappé’s beef with Luis Enrique, which saw the Spanish manager bench the French superstar.
Meanwhile, La Real does not only struggle in European competition but also domestically, where the European qualification is under severe threat due to Athletic Club’s impressive form, who just held Barcelona at a draw in the trenches of San Mamés (0-0).

Real Sociedad vs Paris Saint-Germain, Odds
- Pick: Paris Saint-Germain to win
- Odds: +175 (Tonybet)
Real Sociedad has a problem – and it is not so much the opponent. It’s more about an internal struggle with form and confidence. The current mood suggests the following: Real Sociedad cannot score for the sake of its own survival, and it has become a glaring problem.
Despite a promising start of the season for players like Barrenetxea, the last two months have been painful to watch, week after week.
Sociedad’s entire frontline lacks confidence, and in European competitions, where the stakes are high and the margins for errors are slim, the lesson is the following: You pay for your own lack of confidence.
While La Real scored twice against Sevilla, trailing by two goals against Paris Saint-Germain seems like playing with ten men against a full-strength squad.
The logic is quite simple. Despite PSG usually attacking, they can afford to adopt a mid-block strategy in this clash. Real Sociedad have no choice but to attack, and if they don’t, PSG can keep the status quo with a two-goal advantage, leading them to qualification for the quarterfinals.

However, with Real Sociedad attacking, huge spaces will be left behind – leaving them vulnerable at the back. Against Paris Saint-Germain, a team with many fast runners, the 1v1 will kill the Basques in transition. And there’s no true solution – not in the current configuration.
Real Sociedad vs Paris Saint-Germain Betting Tip
- Pick: Barcola to score
- Odds: +719 (Tonybet)
Carving out a distinct identity is a tough task in a team with Ousmane Dembélé and Kylian Mbappé. But Barcola managed to stand out since he’s become a regular starter in the PSG line-up, with his goal against Real Sociedad in the first leg as his most recent highlight.
He mostly stands out for navigating through compact defences – and many factors lead me to think that on Tuesday, he will dislocate half of the Real Sociedad team by himself.
The ongoing tension between PSG’s manager Enrique and Kylian Mbappé adds an intriguing subplot to the match. Enrique’s hint at possibly benching Mbappé, citing the need for PSG to adapt to a future without him, could impact the match.

For Real Sociedad, this likely means the end of their European journey. But it has been a dream come true for many. Previously, players like Barrenetxea and Oyarzabal could only dream of landing in the Champions League Ro16 – making their campaign a huge success.
Although the project might not have met the expectations this season – Real Sociedad’s journey in the Champions League still makes Alguacil a hero with the current Golden Generation. Even when their neighbours Athletic Bilbao have been the big surprise this season in Spain, who knows what the future brings for the Basques.
