The Sounders are going through a rough patch right now, winless in their previous three MLS matches (D1, L2), including dropping two in a row after losing to Austin FC over the last weekend. 

However, they’re on the verge of securing a spot in the 2025 MLS Playoffs, and what better way to achieve that goal than doing so with a win over one of their biggest rivals?

One of the biggest advantages for Seattle is playing in front of their fans at Lumen Field. The team have lost just one league game at home all season (W8, D5, L1) and rank as the third-best home side in the Western Conference, boasting the second-best attack with 34 goals and a +16 goal differential. 

They trail the Whitecaps in all three categories, but Vancouver hasn’t been nearly as good when playing on the road.

The Sounders won’t be at full strength for this encounter, as midfield stalwart Obed Vargas is on international duty with Mexico ahead of the U20 FIFA World Cup, while Stefan Frei will be a game-time call due to illness. The veteran goalkeeper is expected to play, though, bolstering a Seattle defensive line that’s in huge need of a bounce-back performance given their recent struggles.

The club have lost just three of their last 15 overall (W8, D4, L3).However, it’s unclear just how motivated Vancouver will be for this matchup. Although this rivalry is considered one of the most intense in MLS, the Whitecaps have already secured a playoff spot. 

The team don’t have any proper incentive to go all out for this game, especially given how depleted they are with the playoffs right around the corner.

Injuries are a genuine concern. The list of absentees (or potential absentees) for this contest includes Thomas Müller, Tristan Blackmon, Ranko Veselinovic, Sam Adekugbe, and Ryan Gauld, just to name a few. Without these players, it’s fair to say that the Whitecaps will be far from their Best XI.

However, several factors seem to tip the scales toward Seattle. First and foremost, Vancouver will be weakened by multiple absences, with little incentive to risk their best players with a playoff spot locked up.

Also, it’s not as if the Whitecaps have been dominant on the road. With a W3, D2, L5 away record in their last 10 matches across all competitions, they don’t have a lot of reasons to feel confident against a Seattle side that rarely lose in front of their own fans. 

The Sounders also have a greater motivation, as they’ve yet to secure a spot in the upcoming playoffs. All of that should boost their chances of winning.
