Milan

Recent matches

Milan’s performance in November has been rather inconsistent, ranging from defeats to victories and even draws. Milan lost against the modest Udinese (0-1), won against Paris Saint-Germain in a clear victory despite what the score suggests (2-1), drew against Lecce (2-2), and won their last match against Fiorentina (1-0)

The project at Milan has shown instability during the season, though it is far from a sinking ship. Different versions of the team have been seen, particularly noticeable with Rafael Leão’s uncertainty and his absence in the match against Tottenham.

The fans have to anxiously expect a different version of Pioli’s team each match, already lagging behind in the title race with 26 pts (3rd). In comparison, Juventus (30 pts) and Inter (32 pts) have taken a leap forward in the league.

Key Players

Rafael Leão is, without a doubt, the key to any major match-up, especially against Dortmund, a team whose defence in key moments (i.e. Schlotterbeck) tends to be mentally weak. Samuel Chukwueze, an incoming transfer from Villarreal, did not convince much against Fiorentina.

Should Leão be unable to play against Dortmund, given his doubtful status, Olivier Giroud should be the expected leader in the forward line. Suspended against Fiorentina, Giroud has maintained his status throughout the season as the soul of the attack and a major goal scorer.

The real gamble will be in the midfield: Who should Reijnders be paired with in the double pivot? In the game against PSG, it was Musah who paired with him. But he was used as an attacking midfielder against Fiorentina, while either Krunić or Pobega have partnered with Reijnders

There’s nothing more important than relationships in the Champions League, and Milan seems to be lacking this aspect in their midfield. The key question is where to position Musah. This decision could be a game-changer, representing a gamble for Pioli.

Borussia Dortmund

Recent matches

Borussia Dortmund is often associated with unexplained inconsistency throughout the last years and Dortmund’s November was no different. Borussia might be at the top of The Group of Death in the Champions League (7 pts), but this is the same team that is known for ‘bottling’, a synonym for missing opportunities. They won against Newcastle in the UCL, but the defeat against Stuttgart (1-2) and the heavy defeat against Bayern (0-4) have left Dortmund in 4th place in the Bundesliga, a position that comes as a big shock.

However, the 4-2 victory against M’Gladbach last week-end has boosted morale. Paired with another unstable team, Milan, the match will determine the future of both teams in either the Champions or the Europa League: Welcome to the group of death.

Key Players

A major question that comes up for the clash on Dortmund’s side is who will fill Nmecha’s role as he is currently injured. this leaves Terzic with the challenge of finding suitable replacements. Reus usually plays on the left, which can leave Brandt in this role; however, Brandt has rarely excelled in this position.

It’s also true that Füllkrug is the major goal-scorer of the team and needs support (which is why Donyell Malen has often been used as a substitute, though he is still physically frail.). On the other hand, the double pivot also raises questions between Sabitzer, Özcan and Emre Can. AC Milan’s strength lies precisely in overloading the midfield, and limiting the impact of Theo Hernández from the wide areas will decide the outcome of the game.

Head-to-Head Statistics

Almost two months ago, Dortmund’s last encounter against Milan ended in a dull draw and turned out to be a major game-changer with the uneven points both teams now have. However, it also means that they’re likely to be conservative. Before this year, both teams only met once in 2017, during the International Champions Cup, when Dortmund crushed Milan (3-1).

Milan vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction, Betting Tip

This clash will decide who will prevail and who will be forced to win against the next opponent; therefore, both teams are expected to find a conservative, non-risk approach. However, it also depends on the availability of Rafael Leão, which is uncertain. Seeing a draw as unlikely according to the bets is rather surprising, given both teams’ current situation and difficulties in their own leagues.
