Liverpool showed some signs of life in their 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League last week, but that momentum quickly faded after another loss in the Premier League. 

They were beaten 2-3 by Brentford last Saturday, a defeat that Arne Slot called “their worst” amid their ongoing four-game losing skid in the league.Despite having one of the deepest, most talented squads in Europe, Liverpool haven’t been able to reach top gear yet. After starting the season with seven straight wins across all competitions, something seems to have gone wrong, as they’ve now dropped five of their previous six outings overall (W1). 

Their fixtures have been entertaining, though, with all but one of those six featuring over 2.5 total goals and both teams scoring.

Given their situation in the Premier League standings and their need to get a positive result in this matchup, Slot isn’t expected to rotate his side too much. Not that he has many options anyway. Alisson (groin), Jeremie Frimpong (hamstring), Alexander Isak (groin), and Ryan Gravenberch (ankle) are all set to miss this clash, leaving Slot with minimal depth to make tactical or rest-based changes.

The Eagles battled hard but ultimately fell 1-0 to Arsenal in the Premier League this past weekend, following a 1-0 home defeat against Cyprus side AEK Larnaca in the UEFA Conference League. 

Perhaps the most worrisome aspect of the Larnaca loss was that Palace didn’t rotate much, and now they’re on a four-match winless streak across all competitions (D1, L3).

This is going to be a battle between two teams that have been underperforming in recent weeks, but the Eagles will aim to build on their previous two wins over the Reds this season. Their away form also offers some encouragement, as Palace have lost just twice (W3, D2, L2).

However, the Reds have been struggling badly in recent weeks, looking completely lost and short on confidence. That’s not something that can be fixed in a day or two, especially amid a losing run.

Plus, the recent head-to-head record gives Crystal Palace a clear edge since they’ve already defeated Liverpool twice this season: in the Community Shield in August and in the Premier League in September. It seems Olivier Glasner’s men have their opponents’ number already, and their form suggests that they’re also desperate for a bounce-back result.

It’s unclear how seriously both clubs will take this game, but it wouldn’t be surprising if neither decide to rotate too much. Palace have proven to be a complicated matchup for the Reds, and even though they’re coming off a loss against Arsenal, they could bounce back here.
