The Edmonton Oilers will take on the Vancouver Canucks in the first game of the second round in the Western Conference Stanley Cup Playoffs. 

The Oilers have been in this position before, but in recent seasons, haven’t done what they’ve needed to do to get over that hump. After winning their first series against the Los Angeles Kings in five games, the hope is for them to figure that out and find a way to win this series. This season presents a prime opportunity for them to finally get over that hump, and clinching this series would set them up well to go all the way.

On the other hand, Vancouver was one of the best teams in the regular season, finishing with 109 points. They won the Pacific Division and finished the Western Conference regular season with the third-most points. 

However, they haven’t been in this position recently, and that could come back to hurt them. It took them six games to beat a young Nashville Predators team, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can play better in this series.

When looking at how both teams are going to play in this series, it’s important to recognize that the Edmonton Oilers lit the lamp 294 times this season. That offensive firepower led the entire Pacific Division. If their offence, led by Connor McDavid, arguably the NHL’s best player of the past decade, maintains its performance, they should be able to come out on top. 

If the Oilers are going to win this game, it will be because of what McDavid and the rest of the offence can do. In their first few games, McDavid proved that he was one of the best players in hockey once again, having two or more points in three of the five first-round games.

The Oilers impressed me the most as a team in that series because of their ability to win games when they weren’t blowing them out. While they secured victories with high-scoring margins of 7-4 and 6-1 in two games, they also demonstrated defensive prowess in narrow wins of 1-0 and 4-3.  

If their defence can flip the script and translate stops into scoring opportunities, maintaining their strong play on that side of the puck, they have to feel confident against any team in the league.

Vancouver does have an impressive defence, evidenced by their only 223 goals given up, which was the second-fewest in the Pacific Division and third-fewest in the Western Conference, but it’s tough to stop a potent defence like the Oilers.

McDavid has been lighting it up during the playoffs and will need to keep the same energy for Game 1. In the first Game 1 of their series against the Los Angeles Kings, he racked up five points – all assists.

If he can continue to distribute the puck the way that he did throughout the regular season and first round, he’ll stay in the sweet spot. He finished the regular season with 100 assists and 132 total points, ranking first and third in those respective categories.
