Canada vs Ecuador Preview and Team News
Canada Team News
Canada didn’t have the best run of results during the October international break, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Australia and couldn’t get past a scoreless draw against Colombia.
Despite having two accomplished strikers in Jonathan David and Cyle Larin, finding the back of the net remains an issue for the Canucks. They’ve now failed to score more than one goal in regulation in four of their last five games.
This matchup against Ecuador doesn’t get any easier on paper. La Tri were one of the best sides in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying run – arguably the toughest in the world – and only conceded five goals in 18 matches to finish in second place. They finished ahead of Brazil, Uruguay, and Colombia, so Canada should have their hands full in this contest against an elite defensive squad.

Jesse Marsch continues to search for the right balance in his team, but it remains to be seen if the former New York Red Bulls manager will move away from the 4-4-2 tactic for this game. The scheme simply doesn’t play to Canada’s strengths.
This tough test against Ecuador will be a good way to see whether they can adjust against disciplined defensive sides, something the Canucks will have to deal with during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Canada predicted lineup vs Ecuador (4-4-2): Crépeau; Laryea, Miller, Cornelius, Ahmed; Buchanan, Eustáquio, Koné, Choinière; David, Larin.
Ecuador Team News
Ecuador are widely regarded as one of the best squads in the CONMEBOL region – and rightfully so, given how good they’ve been in recent years. They finished the 2026 FIFA World Cup CONMEBOL Qualifiers in second place with an impressive record (W8, D8, L2). No side conceded fewer goals or lost fewer games than La Tri, a remarkable achievement by all means.
It’s hard to see Ecuador performing as a goal-friendly team, though. They only scored one goal in each of their two fixtures during the October international break, 1-1 draws against Mexico and the USA.

They’ve also failed to score more than once in each of their last seven outings. The last time they did so, it was a 2-1 home win over Venezuela in the altitude of Quito (over 2,500 metres above sea level).
Form-wise, though, it’s easy to see why Ecuador are being tipped as favourites. Between friendlies and competitive matches, they’re riding an impressive 13-game unbeaten run (W5, D8) and last suffered a defeat against Brazil in September 2024. Canada will have a tough time ending that streak, given Ecuador’s defensive prowess and elite talent at the back.
Ecuador predicted lineup vs Canada (3-4-2-1): Galíndez; Hincapié, Pacho, Ordóñez; Preciado, Caicedo, Franco, Minda; Páez, Yeboah; Valencia.

Friendly matches are often hard to predict. With the World Cup right around the corner and the European seasons in full swing, it might not be the worst time to start analyzing potential new additions to the upcoming World Cup rosters. But when assessing the player pool from both countries, it’s clear that Ecuador have significantly more depth than Canada in terms of overall talent and potential.
Even with the support of their fans at BMO Field in Toronto, it’ll be tough for the hosts to get past La Tri.

The visitors have most of their regulars playing in some of the best leagues in the CONMEBOL and UEFA regions, and their defensive ability is likely to prove too much for a Canadian side that have yet to reach their full potential in attack under Jesse Marsch’s 4-4-2 tactical approach. The pace of the Ecuadorian wingers will also challenge the Canucks’ defensive line.
This game isn’t expected to be high-scoring, as neither team are known for delivering explosive offensive performances. But all things considered, Ecuador are tipped as favourites and should back that up with a tight win over Canada in Toronto.
Canada vs Ecuador Betting Tip
- Pick: Under 2.5 total goals
- Odds: -127 (Tonybet)
If there’s one thing that characterized Ecuador during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, it was their defensive prowess. Sebastian Beccacece’s men conceded only five goals in 18 CONMEBOL qualifying matches and ended the road to the 2026 World Cup with five straight clean sheets. Few teams in the world have been as good defensively as Ecuador in recent years.
Plus, their last seven encounters between the qualifying run and friendlies have featured under 2.5 total goals, with four ending in scoreless stalemates, including a massive 1-0 win over Argentina. Expect that trend to continue here, as Ecuador should have enough talent at the back to offset Canada’s firepower up front.
