Atlético Ottawa have been losing ground on the title race over the last few weeks. Based on their current form, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say they’re going through one of their most complicated runs of the season. 

They’re coming off a 2-2 draw against Cavalry at home, and that means they’ve gone two fixtures without a win in league play. Across all competitions, their winless skid has reached three outings.

One of those was a 1-3 defeat against Vancouver FC in the first leg of the Canadian Championship semifinals. Thus, it wouldn’t be surprising if Ottawa play this game with a chip on their shoulders. They need a positive result to keep Forge FC within striking distance. 

The fact that they’ll be playing at home should boost their chances of getting a good result as well, as Ottawa haven’t lost a competitive match at TD Place since August 2024. They’ve put together a W7, D4 record this year, but failed to win three of their last four home fixtures.

VFC are coming off a 0-1 home loss to Forge FC, the runaway leaders in the standings. It was an encouraging performance, but one that showed the team remains far from being able to go toe to toe against the top sides in the league.

If they plan to pull the upset, one player who will need to be at his best is Nicolás Mezquida. The talented playmaker, who has experience in MLS, is Vancouver’s top scorer in the CPL this season with four goals. Elage Bah and Hubo Mboungue are two other names to watch.

Even though the capital club are going through their worst stretch of the season, they’re the better team ahead of this clash by a wide margin. Their undefeated home record and their average of 2.33 goals scored per encounter at TD Place should be too much for Vancouver to handle. 

The hosts may not be able to keep a clean sheet, as they’ve conceded in two of their last four home fixtures and in their last three head-to-head meetings with VFC. However, Ottawa should control possession and dominate the game, forcing the Eagles to play on the counter.
