The Canadian Open, also branded as the National Bank Open by Rogers, kicks off on July 27. Last year, we witnessed an unexpected champion, with Alexei Popyrin claiming the crown by defeating Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

On the women’s side, Jessica Pegula has been a dominant force lately. She won in 2023 and successfully defended the title in 2024, becoming the first woman to do so since Martina Hingis in 2000.

Heading into the 2025 edition, the landscape has shifted dramatically, as several of the tour’s biggest stars – Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz – have all withdrawn from the tournament.

With top seeds absent, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz are now leading the men’s side, and the door is wide open for other contenders like Félix Auger‑Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov.

On the women’s side, Jessica Pegula returns as a two-time defending champion, seeking a rare three-peat. She’ll face strong competition from top seeds Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek, though world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has also opted out of the draw to conserve energy ahead of the US Open.

With expanded draws and an increased paycheck ($9,193,540), the stage is set for action. Make sure to check out the main favourites to clinch the trophy for the men’s and women’s draws.

Men’s Prediction, Odds

As the highest-ranked player in the field following mass withdrawals, Alexander Zverev enters Toronto as the top seed. A seven-time Masters 1000 champion (including the 2017 Canadian Open), Zverev has plenty of experience on hard courts. His consistency and past success at this event make him the pre-tournament favourite.

A former champion and US Open finalist, Taylor Fritz is an expert at playing on North American hard courts. Known for his aggressive baseline game and strong serve, he could be Zverev’s major rival for the title.

While not among the very top seeds, Alexei Popyrin returns as the defending champion from Montréal 2024. His proven ability to win big matches on Canadian hard courts gives him a realistic chance to defend his title.

If Zverev stays healthy and focused, his tournament resume suggests he holds the edge. We expect the German player to advance to the final and face Taylor Fritz, where the former will likely prevail.

Women’s Prediction, Odds

As the two-time defending champion, Jessica Pegula is aiming to become the first woman to win three straight Canadian Open titles since Monica Seles in the late 1990s. With three titles already in 2025, she is in excellent form, especially on hard courts.

American talent Coco Gauff will likely be the main favourite alongside Pegula at the National Bank Open. Fresh off lifting her second Grand Slam title at the French Open, her tactical variety, versatility, and poise under pressure will be instrumental.

Despite early exits earlier in the season, Iga Świątek remains one of the most dangerous players in any draw. Her powerful groundstrokes and ability to absorb pace make her a threat once she gets going. Though she lost to Pegula in the Bad Homburg final, that match proved she’s still competitive on fast surfaces when healthy.

We believe that Jessica Pegula is the most likely to reach the final, given her dominance in Canada, current form, and unbeaten record. If she stays healthy, reaching the final shouldn’t be a problem. A showdown between her and Coco Gauff seems like a likely outcome, and in that case, the reigning champion Pegula should come out on top once again.
