Few teams in the NHL are as hot as the Oilers right now. Led by the star duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who are fully established as one of the most reliable scoring duos in the league, the Oilers enter this game having won seven of their last 10 games. 

They entered the Christmas break on a two-game winning streak after back-to-back wins over the Flames and Golden Knights before the festivities.

The Flames have also been playing well of late and enter this game with a W6, L3, OT1 record over their last 10 contests.

However, they dropped their most recent game on December 23, against this same opponent by a 5-1 score, so they’re looking for revenge in front of their home fans. 

It’s hard to see the Flames getting something out of this game against the Oilers, however.

Despite their solid results of late, the Oilers have one of the best offenses in the NHL, and they’re extremely dangerous when their elite power-play unit is clicking. 

They are first in power-play effectiveness (34.3 percent), while the Flames rank 30th (13.6 percent), and that battle of special teams could decide the game. 

The Oilers will rely on their elite attack (3.42 goals per game) against a subpar defense (3.00 goals against per game) to walk away with the victory from Alberta.

No player in the NHL is playing as well as Connor McDavid of late, and although the likes of Nathan MacKinnon and Leon Draisaitl could make an argument against the claim, no one is as decisive as McDavid right now. 

The star playmaker can’t seem to stop scoring, and he’s posting video-game-like numbers in recent weeks. 

McDavid is coming off a five-assist performance in the 5-1 win over the Flames on December 23, so he knows a thing or two about making an impact against Calgary’s defensive line. 

That extended his point streak to 11 games, and with nine multi-point efforts in that stretch, McDavid could be in line for another big game here. He’s notched 31 points (12 goals, 19 helpers) in that 11-game stretch.

The Oilers are massive favorites to win this game, especially since they already defeated Calgary 5-1 a few days ago. 

But even if the Flames avenge that loss, don’t expect their defense to find a way to slow Connor McDavid down, because that’s something no defense in the league has done since the beginning of December. 

McDavid has notched 31 points (12 goals, 19 helpers) in a prolific 11-game point streak, and he has nine multi-point performances over that stretch. Leon Draisaitl could also find a way to crack the scoresheet. 

The star center recorded a hat trick against the Flames and is also playing at an elite level with 24 points (five goals, 19 assists) in his last 11 contests.

The Flames will rely on Nazem Kadri to provide offensive production. The 35-year-old has gone pointless in his last two games, but he still has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) over his previous 10 appearances.

The Oilers will continue to miss the same five players who have been absent in recent weeks. The list includes Connor Clattenburg (eye), Tristan Jarry (lower body), Kasperi Kapanen (lower body), Jake Walman (lower body) and Noah Philp (upper body). 

Out of those five players, Clattenburg is the only one who’s expected to return to the ice before the end of December, although the other four players should be back in early January. Not having Jarry means Calvin Pickard will continue starting most games for the Oilers, with Connor Ingram as the backup netminder.

The Flames will be without several players for this matchup. The list includes Samuel Honzek (upper body), Zayne Parekh (not injury related) and Jake Bean (undisclosed), while star prospect Henry Mews (knee) is out for the rest of the 2025-26 college season.

Martin Pospíšil is considered a game-time call for Saturday due to an undisclosed injury, and a decision on his status will be made closer to the game. Pospíšil has yet to play this season.
