Montreal Canadiens vs Washington Capitals Moneyline Prediction
- Moneyline Pick: Washington Capitals
- Odds: -122 (Tonybet)
The Capitals suffered a second straight defeat on Tuesday, falling 4-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes after stumbling to a 5-3 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Sunday. That snapped their brief two-game winning streak from earlier this month, but Washington (3-3-0) should feel confident about its chances here. The Capitals have won two of three at Capital One Arena (2-1-0) so far in 2026-27.

The Canadiens are on the opposite run and have won two in a row against the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres, but those back-to-back shootout wins came after a three-game losing skid between October 3 and October 8. Montreal has opened the season with a 3-2-1 record, and tired legs could be an issue for it after two straight shootouts.
Both teams are on the second night of their back-to-backs and are likely to rotate their goaltenders. Jakub Dobes (1-1-1, 4.43 GAA, .856) is expected to get the nod for the Canadiens, and Charlie Lindgren (0-1-0, 2.08 GAA, .931) for the Capitals.
Washington has a clear statistical edge. The Capitals score more goals per game (3.17 to 2.83), concede fewer (3.00 to 3.67), and have better goaltending overall (collective .898 save percentage to Montreal’s .861), supporting them as favourites here at -122.
Montreal Canadiens vs Washington Capitals Player Prop
- Prop Bet: Ryan Leonard Over 2.5 Shots on Goal
- Odds: +118 (Tonybet)
Ryan Leonard delivered two assists in Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to the Hurricanes, and the 21-year-old left winger has been thriving in his middle-six role. He’s riding a four-game point streak with one goal and four assists.
Leonard’s shooting numbers have also been encouraging, as he’s taken at least two shots on goal in each of his six appearances while clearing the 2.5-shot line three times. He has the volume to clear it again against a Montreal defence that has allowed 26.3 shots per game in 2026-27.
Montreal Canadiens vs Washington Capitals Total Goals Prediction
- Total Goals Pick: Over 5.5 Goals
- Odds: -186 (Tonybet)
Four of the Capitals’ six games this season have gone over the 5.5-goal line, as have four of Montreal’s. Just one of the Habs’ outings has seen under five total goals, so their games have been relatively open.

Each of the last six head-to-head meetings has also produced five or more goals, and two of the three in 2025-26 went over this proposed line. With both teams allowing 3.00 goals or more early in the season, and backup goaltenders expected to feature, there’s potential for another high-scoring contest.
Montreal Canadiens vs Washington Capitals Team News
Montreal Canadiens Team News
The Canadiens will have to make several decisions, with forwards Oliver Kapanen (lower body) and Florian Xhekaj (undisclosed), as well as defenceman Mike Matheson (lower body), tabbed as game-time calls. Ivan Demidov (lower body), Sam Montembeault (lower body), Lucas Condotta (undisclosed), and Bryce Pickford (undisclosed) have been ruled out.
Losing Demidov is a huge blow for Montreal, as he posted 19 goals and 43 assists last season, and Kapanen’s absence (37 points in 2025-26) is also significant. That means key players such as Nick Suzuki (eight points in six games in 2026-27) and Cole Caufield (three goals this season) will have to carry even more of the offensive load.

This is a one-game road trip for the Canadiens. They played their previous four at Bell Centre, going 2-2-0, and they also start a two-game homestand on Saturday against the Sabres.
Washington Capitals Team News
Pierre-Luc Dubois’s availability is uncertain for the Capitals due to an illness, so he’ll be a game-time decision after missing Tuesday’s loss to the Hurricanes. If he’s out, Ilya Protas would remain on the first line alongside Alex Ovechkin.
Defenceman Matt Roy (lower body) and centre Patrick Thomas (upper body) are out and not expected back until later this month. Roy’s absence should open up more blueline time for Justin Holl, who scored Tuesday, while Thomas is a depth option. Key players Leonard (five points in his last four games) and Boone Jenner, who has scored in the last three, should lead the offence alongside Ovechkin.
“[Our PK’s] working their bags off. They’re blocking shots, and it’s not easy. The way Carolina plays, they keep us hemmed in our zone and unfortunately you take penalties sometimes.”

This will be the fourth time the Capitals have played at home in their last five games, going 2-1-0, and this clash falls into a prolonged homestand for Washington, as they’ll remain at home until October 28.
