Toronto Maple Leafs vs Ottawa Senators Main Match Info

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Ottawa Senators Moneyline Prediction

The Senators have been trending in the right direction of late and could’ve entered the Christmas break on a five-game winning streak, but they suffered a 3-2 overtime defeat against the Buffalo Sabres.

Still, the Senators have won five of their last seven games (W5, L1, OT1), and they’re every right to be considered one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference right now.

The Maple Leafs continue to navigate the waters of inconsistency, but at least they avoided entering the Christmas break in a losing streak.

Their 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 22 snapped a three-game losing run, and the lack of consistency on a game-to-game basis has limited Toronto’s ability to escape the bottom part of the standings.

The Maple Leafs enter this game in 14th place in the Eastern Conference standings with a W16, L15, OT5 record.

Even though they’ve had decent results when playing at home, it’s hard to see Toronto’s woeful defense having a good performance against a red-hot Ottawa attack that is averaging 4.25 goals scored per game in their last five contests. Expect the Senators to steal the win despite playing on the road.

Brady Tkachuk has been scorching hot of late. The star winger didn’t crack the scoresheet in the 3-2 loss to the Sabres on December 23, but that game snapped a five-game point streak where the 26-year-old notched five goals and seven total points

Don’t be surprised if Tkachuk finds the back of the net again in this contest. The winger has 16 points (six points, 10 assists) in 16 games this season after opening the campaign on the sidelines, but he’s trending in the right direction in recent games.

The matchup is also favorable for Tkachuk, as the Maple Leafs have the third-worst defensive record in the Eastern Conference, conceding 121 goals.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Ottawa Senators Same Game Parlay

Our three-leg parlay backs the Senators to win, as Ottawa has been the best team of the two in the last few weeks.

Despite their recent loss to the Sabres before the Christmas break, the Senators should have enough quality to get past a Toronto team that has shown defensive shortcomings all season long.

The Maple Leafs’ defensive shortcomings are one of the main reasons why we believe this game will be a high-scoring matchup. Aside from averaging 3.33 goals per game this season, the Senators rank eighth in goals scored with 3.22.

Toronto also ranks ninth in that category (3.19), so both teams have the ability to put the puck in the back of the net.

If the Senators are going to win, expect Tim Stützle to make an impact on offense.

The star playmaker has been the driving force behind the Senators’ impressive play of late and enters this game having racked up nine points (three goals, six assists) over his last five appearances.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Ottawa Senators Team News

Toronto Maple Leafs Team News

The Maple Leafs will be without several players for this matchup, although the list of absentees has been the same as in recent weeks. Brandon Carlo (foot), Dakota Mermis (lower body), Marshall Rifai (wrist) and Anthony Stolarz (upper body).

Out of those four players, though, Stolarz is the only one who would have a steady role in the lineup when healthy.

The absence of Stolarz means Joseph Woll will remain as the starting netminder for the Maple Leafs, with Dennis Hildeby as the occasional backup.

Ottawa Senators Team News

The Senators have two injury doubts ahead of this matchup on Saturday, with Shane Pinto (lower body) and Tyler Kleven (lower body) being uncertain to play.

Meanwhile, center Lars Eller has been ruled out due to a foot injury, but he’s been sidelined for a while now and is not expected back until January at the earliest.

Having Pinto back in the lineup would be huge for the Senators, as the 25-year-old playmaker has been outstanding for Ottawa. He has 12 goals, 18 points, 65 shots on net, 18 blocked shots and 34 hits across 27 appearances this season. If deemed ready to return, Pinto would likely slot in a top-six role right away.
