Even though the Maple Leafs sit in a disappointing 14th place in the Eastern Conference, their biggest issues have come on the defensive side of the puck.

However, that wasn’t an isolated incident, as Matthews has tallied 10 points over his last four games (six goals, four assists) and is a strong candidate to keep producing against an inconsistent Panthers defence.

The Maple Leafs could have a massive boost on offence for this game with the potential return of star playmaker William Nylander. The Swedish forward is listed as day-to-day, so some clarification on his status will happen at some point after Monday’s skate. 

Defenceman Jake McCabe is also considered day-to-day and could return for this contest.

The remaining absentees won’t be available this time. The list includes goaltender Anthony Stolarz (upper body), defencemen Chris Tanev (groin), Dakota Mermis (lower body), and Brandon Carlo (foot), as well as left winger Dakota Joshua (upper body). All five players are expected back at some point during January.

The Panthers will enjoy the return of star blueliner Seth Jones for this game, as he missed the 2-1 win over the Avalanche on Sunday due to an upper-body injury. 

Jones has registered six goals, 24 points, 78 shots on net, 47 blocked shots, and 38 hits across 40 appearances this season, so having him around on the blueline would be a massive boost for the Panthers.

Florida will also be without several players who will remain out for either multiple weeks or multiple months. The list includes star forwards Aleksander Barkov (knee) and Matthew Tkachuk (groin), as well as Cole Schmidt (arms), Tomas Nosek (knee), Dmitry Kulikov (upper body), and Jonah Gadjovich (upper body).
