Toronto Maple Leafs vs Tampa Bay Lightning Main Match Info

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Tampa Bay Lightning Moneyline Prediction

The Maple Leafs saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday in a loss to the Montreal Canadiens in a battle between bitter Canadian rivals.

Despite the 2-1 shootout defeat, the uptick in Toronto’s play has been noticeable. They own a W5, L3, OT2 record in their last 10 outings, a run that has allowed them to leave the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

The Maple Leafs have relied on their powerful scoring to get the job done of late, as they’re averaging nearly 3.0 goals scored per encounter over their previous 10. They averaged 5.3 goals during their brief three-game winning run, and that attack will be a tough matchup for the Lightning. Tampa Bay have lost their last three contests, conceding eight and scoring just four times in that span.

The Bolts are one of the most talented teams in the NHL, but it’s hard to see them getting a positive result here.

They could be without some of their best players due to injury, such as Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy, which would hinder their chances considerably. They also have a disadvantage in the head-to-head department, as the Lightning have lost their last four meetings with Toronto.

Even if Tampa Bay are superior on paper and talent-wise, the Maple Leafs have the edge of playing at home and have been the better squad over the last week. Expect Toronto to get back to winning ways in front of their fans and beat a struggling Lightning side.

Matthews went pointless in the 2-1 loss to the Canadiens. However, the veteran playmaker had been on a tear before that, riding a four-game, five-point streak heading into the matchup with Montreal.

It wouldn’t be surprising if he’s able to crack the scoresheet once again.

The first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft hasn’t been at his best this season and has “only” recorded 19 points in 23 appearances (11 goals, eight assists).

However, Matthews seems to be turning things around, and we’re backing him to produce against a Lightning team that might be forced to play a backup goaltender.

It’s easy to back the over on the goals market. The Lightning might play their backup goaltender if Vasilevskiy isn’t available, while Toronto’s defensive woes are well-documented. The Maple Leafs have conceded 93 goals already, the sixth-worst mark in the Eastern Conference.

Kucherov and Nylander should be able to step up. Kucherov missed Saturday’s loss to the Islanders but has been outstanding lately, with 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) over his last 11 games. Nylander, on the other hand, has picked up nine points (three goals, six assists) over that stretch, although he’s gone pointless in the last three – his longest drought of the season.

Toronto Maple Leafs Team News

The Maple Leafs are lacking depth between the pipes since Joseph Woll (lower body) and Anthony Stolarz (upper body) are out. This means Dennis Hildeby, who started against Montreal on Saturday, will remain the starting goaltender until further notice.

Brandon Carlo (lower body), Marshall Rifai (wrist), and Chris Tanev (upper body) are also out. Tanev could return at some point this week, but Carlo and Rifai are sidelined for longer stretches and won’t return before the end of the current calendar year.

Tampa Bay Lightning Team News

Nikita Kucherov is day-to-day with a wrist injury, but he has a chance of playing in this encounter. The star winger isn’t the only questionable player for Monday’s matchup. Andrei Vasilevskiy (undisclosed), Dominic James (undisclosed), and Curtis Douglas (undisclosed) are all game-time calls here.

Ryan McDonagh (undisclosed) and Brayden Point (undisclosed) are on injured reserve and won’t be able to play Monday, but they could return to the lineup at some point this week. Erik Cernak (undisclosed) is also on injured reserve and will miss the upcoming week, but he may be back in the near future.
