Are there any team in the NHL capable of stopping the Colorado Avalanche? It’s hard to make a case for anyone in the league. The Avs not only sit at the top of the Western Conference standings with 55 points from 33 fixtures (W24, L2, OT7), but they also have lost just two games in regulation.

With that in mind, it’s not surprising to see why they have the best record in the league by a wide margin. 

The second-best side in the NHL, the Dallas Stars, have six fewer points, while Colorado also hold a nine-point advantage over the top-seeded club in the Eastern Conference, the Carolina Hurricanes. 

The Avalanche are nearly unstoppable at home as well (W13, OT2), as the altitude at Ball Arena (5,280 feet above sea level) gives them a sizable edge.

The Jets have been slumping of late, and they couldn’t have asked for a worse time to face a red-hot Colorado squad. 

Winnipeg are coming off a 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues and have dropped five of their last six contests (W1, L4, OT1), despite having Connor Hellebuyck back between the posts.

The Avalanche have the edge of playing at home and also feature the best goaltending tandem in the league, while excelling on offence (league-high 4.03 goals scored per game), defence (league-best 2.21 goals allowed per game), and special teams, including the best penalty-killing in the NHL (85.3 percent of efficiency). 

It’s difficult to envision a realistic scenario in which the Avalanche don’t win this game easily.

If the Avalanche are to continue their strong run of play at home, they’ll need Nathan MacKinnon to be at his best. 

That shouldn’t be an issue, though, as he’s currently riding an impressive six-game point streak, during which he’s notched 12 points (six goals, six assists).

MacKinnon has also produced two or more points in four straight outings, as well as nine of his last 11 appearances. With the way the Jets have been struggling on defence lately, MacKinnon could be primed to have another stellar display in front of the Avalanche fans.

Makar is another player worth watching. The star blueliner ranks first among defencemen in points in the NHL with 40 in 33 outings, comprised of 10 goals and 30 assists. Makar is also riding an impressive seven-game point streak, during which he’s notched just one goal but seven helpers. 

His 30 assists are tied for fourth-most in the NHL.

The Avalanche won’t be missing any key players. Their only two absences are defenceman Jacob MacDonald and winger Logan O’Connor, both due to hip injuries. O’Connor is expected back before the end of December, but MacDonald won’t be eligible to return until February at the earliest.

The Jets are close to full strength. The lone player who remains absent is Haydn Fleury, who’s on injured reserve due to a concussion and will be a game-time call for this matchup.
