France vs Ukraine Team News

France Team News

France dropped points in the World Cup Qualifiers for the first time in their campaign after a surprising 2-2 draw against Iceland, which, however, did not affect their position at the top of Group D.

Les Bleus dominated the match in every metric, claiming 70% possession and registering 20 shots that generated 2.5 xG. Despite conceding less than 1.0 xG, they allowed two goals, one in each half. In fact, individual brilliance saved Didier Deschamps from defeat, as Jean-Philippe Mateta and Christopher Nkunku both scored in the second half, just five minutes apart.

France had only conceded one goal in three games up to that point — in a 2-1 victory against Iceland. Against Azerbaijan and Ukraine, the French kept clean sheets (3-0 and 2-0, respectively). Former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kanté has been selected for the first time in a year, replacing the injured Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot. Ousmane Dembélé will also miss the clash due to injury.

France predicted lineup vs Ukraine (4-2-3-1): Chevalier; Digne, Upamecano, Saliba, Gusto; Camavinga, Kanté; Nkunku, Cherki, Akliouche; Mateta.

Ukraine Team News

As expected, Ukraine have already positioned themselves as the second-ranked team in Group D, with an undefeated record aside from their 0-2 loss to France in the first match. While their attack has been just fine, there are some concerns about their defence, as they’ve yet to keep a clean sheet.

In their most recent outing, they beat Azerbaijan 2-1. They produced 2.34 xG but created only three big chances from 22 shots. Azerbaijan’s equalizer wasn’t a product of their attack but rather of Ukraine’s unfortunate defence, as it came from an own goal by Vitaliy Mykolenko in first-half stoppage time (45′ +3).

The team narrowly secured victory over Iceland in a tense 5-3 game, despite leading 3-1 at half-time. By the 75th minute, Iceland had already equalized 3-3 thanks to a brace from Albert Guðmundsson, but two late goals allowed Ukraine to keep the victory.

Ukraine predicted lineup vs France (4-1-4-1): Trubin; Mykolenko; Matviyenko, Zabarnyi, Konoplia; Yarmolyuk; Zubkov, Ocheretko, Malinovskyi, Hutsulyak; Dovbyk.

France vs Ukraine Prediction, Odds

France have dominated Group D thus far, as expected. Their individual quality has often been the difference between victory and defeat, with only Iceland snatching a 2-2 draw. Even with stars like Tchouaméni or Dembélé sidelined, the French are expected to dominate and win the tie at Parc des Princes.

In previous matches, players who hadn’t regularly featured, like Mateta, proved to be key. With the return of N’Golo Kanté, Deschamps can count on his veteran experience to lead a team full of young and dynamic players, who sometimes lack the nerves to withstand pressure. Against a compact block like Ukraine’s, his calm temperament will be more than welcomed.

France vs Ukraine Betting Tip

France may be without Dembélé, but it’ll still be difficult for Ukraine to break through. Didier Deschamps can count on the Upamecano-Saliba partnership in defence to keep most attacks at bay, while the return of N’Golo Kanté should translate into a more defensive approach, due to his profile. His tendency to drop deep and support the backline will create a central trio in defence, allowing the full-backs to act as wingers.

Aside from the 2-2 draw against Iceland, France have never conceded more than one goal. With Zinchenko out of form and an overreliance on Dovbyk’s output, Ukraine will have a difficult time breaking through the French backline at Parc des Princes.
