Chelsea must get back to winning ways in the Premier League urgently before Enzo Maresca’s seat starts to get warmer. The Blues went three matches without a win between the EPL and the UEFA Champions League (D1, L2) before their 2-1 victory over Lincoln in the third round of the EFL Cup. However, their progress can’t be measured by their performance against a League One opponent.

The reality is that Chelsea have been slumping. They opened the season with a four-game undefeated run in the league (W2, D2), but the draw against Brentford left negative impressions that were far bigger than Cole Palmer’s injury. 

They looked overmatched against Bayern Munich and played with 10 men for nearly the entire clash against Manchester United. By all accounts, the Blues are trending in the wrong direction.

However, a return to Stamford Bridge might be what Chelsea need to turn things around. They played each of their last four competitive fixtures on the road (W1, D1, L2), but they hold an outstanding record at home in the Premier League with an ongoing 12-game undefeated streak (W9, D3). 

The team should lean on that record and the fact that they’ve yet to concede a goal at Stamford Bridge this season to believe they can get a positive result.

The team are enjoying another excellent start to a Premier League campaign and enter this game filled with confidence after their positive results against fellow “Top Six” clubs like Manchester City (W 2-1) and Tottenham (D 2-2).

It may be unfair to use the EFL Cup as a true measure of Brighton’s level, especially against lower-tier sides, but it’s impossible to ignore that they’ve won their two EFL Cup matches by identical 6-0 scores. 

Their overall record of W3, D2, L2 isn’t perfect, but this squad are clearly on the rise compared to mid-August, when they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Everton.

Last but not least, Brighton should also have some sort of psychological edge over Chelsea since they’ve won the previous two head-to-head meetings by a combined 5-1 score. The Blues have responded by winning the last three EPL fixtures here, but given how good the Seagulls have looked lately, it would be a mistake to rule Brighton out of a potential upset scenario.

On top of that, Chelsea will be without several instrumental first-team players due to injury, such as Cole Palmer (groin) and Levi Colwill (knee), which only increases the likelihood of Brighton avoiding a loss at Stamford Bridge for the first time since the 2022-23 campaign. 

The Seagulls have already proven themselves capable of competing against the likes of Man City and Spurs, and there’s no reason to think they can’t do the same against a weakened Chelsea squad. The visitors might not have enough in them to clinch all three points, but they should be good enough to steal at least one from this trip to London.
