France bounced back from their third-place finish in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League with a convincing 2-0 away win over Ukraine in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers opener. 

Les Bleus looked fully in control at Tarczynski Arena, winning the xG battle by a sizable margin (2.42 to 1.34) and edging Ukraine in most stats as Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise found the back of the net.

Playing at home should be considered an easier thing for France, and with that in mind, it’s not surprising to see them as overwhelming favourites against a lesser opponent such as Iceland. 

However, their record in front of their fans hasn’t been as dominant as one might expect. Didier Deschamps’ men have failed to secure a victory in five of their last 10 matches at home, including friendlies (W5, D3, L2).

France will also be without two key attacking pieces, as Desire Doué and Ousmane Dembélé left the win over Ukraine with injuries. Dembélé’s case might be more complicated since he lasted 35 minutes out there.

One big issue for the Scandinavian side has been their defensive play, which could spell trouble given all the weapons France have at their disposal on the attacking end. Head coach Arnar Gunnlaugsson was appointed in January 2025, and his team have conceded seven times in his five games in charge.

However, they should take encouragement from the solid defensive effort in their most recent win.

It would be shocking if Iceland made too many changes to the squad that scored five goals past Azerbaijan. That said, expect them to deploy a far more cautious approach this time. Aware of their status as heavy underdogs with no home advantage, Gunnlaugsson’s men could operate more defensively with hopes of stealing a point at the Parc des Princs.

France shouldn’t have significant problems securing all three points against Iceland. Even though they’ve been underperforming at times, Les Bleus are simply too talented not to settle for anything other than a dominant victory. Deschamps’ side also carry the psychological advantage of being undefeated in their all-time head-to-head against Iceland with 11 wins in 15 matches.

France’s recent record further supports a comfortable result. They’ve won by at least two goals in three of their last four wins across all competitions. 

The visitors might put up a fight and make things complicated for Deschamps’ men, particularly if they play with a different tactical approach, but Les Bleus should eventually find a way to solve the Icelandic defensive puzzle and win at home.

The -2.5 handicap might be an aggressive move, but it’s also a fair reflection of the gap in talent between France’s attack and Iceland’s defence. While the French lineup is filled with players who regularly feature in the Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga, Gunnlaugsson’s squad have very few with top-level European experience. That should be evident throughout the game, paving the way for an easy win for the hosts.
