Newcastle United vs Liverpool Preview and Team News

Newcastle United Team News

Newcastle United have grabbed headlines for all the wrong reasons since the beginning of the summer after missing out on several transfer targets.

Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t kick off the 2025-26 Premier League campaign with a win and instead settled for a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa, despite playing more than 30 minutes with a man advantage after Ezri Konsa was sent off.

However, even more worrying for Newcastle was their inability to find the back of the net despite outplaying their opponents. The Magpies notched a 1.44 xG against Villa’s 0.20 and recorded a sizable edge in both shots (16 to 3) and possession (60% to 40%). Their performance only highlighted how much they need Alexander Isak to return. However, the Swedish forward remains adamant about not playing for the club again.

The absence of Isak is the lone notable issue the St. James’ Park outfit are dealing with in terms of personnel. Joe Willock was seen in training earlier this week and should be available off the bench. Manager Eddie Howe isn’t expected to tweak his side too much despite the stalemate in the season opener and should field a similar starting XI for the clash against the reigning league champions.

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Liverpool (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Gordon, Barnes.

Liverpool Team News

Liverpool kicked off their title defence with a solid 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield. However, the win wasn’t as comfortable as the final scoreline might suggest. The Reds jumped to a quick 2-0 lead but conceded back-to-back goals midway through the second half, exposing ongoing defensive issues. Two late goals ultimately secured the victory.

Liverpool strengthened their squad on both ends of the pitch over the summer, but the Bournemouth match showed that the team still need to find the defensive cohesion they had last season.

Still, with a front four of Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo, and Hugo Ekitike, the Reds can rely on their attacking power to win most games. Both Ekitike and Salah scored against Bournemouth.

The win came at a cost, as Jeremie Frimpong suffered a hamstring injury that will rule him out until after the international break. That leaves Arne Slot short at right-back, with Conor Bradley also unavailable and Joe Gomez not fit enough to start. Liverpool should get a boost in midfield, though, as Ryan Gravenberch is set to return after his ban.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Jones, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.

The victory over Bournemouth highlighted that Liverpool need to work defensively, and the absence of a natural right-back could be an issue against a Newcastle offence that relies on pace to generate chances.

However, the Reds should have enough quality in them to not only limit the Magpies’ attack but to win this match. The absence of Isak limits Newcastle’s attacking potential considerably.

Slot’s men should also take confidence from their dominant record against their opponents. Even though the Tyneside club won the 2024-25 EFL Cup final earlier this year, Liverpool are riding a 17-game undefeated streak against them in the Premier League (W12, D5). The last time Newcastle defeated the Reds at St. James’ Park in league play was back in the 2015-16 season.

Newcastle United vs Liverpool Betting Tip

There are a few different angles to consider here, but we’ll back Ekitike to hit the scoresheet again. The Frenchman recorded a goal and an assist in the win over Bournemouth, and his mobility should trouble the opposing centre-backs.

Ekitike took four shots in that game, meaning that he’s being sought after by his teammates. That gives him a good floor to find the back of the net here.

Additionally, Ekitike could also benefit from Newcastle’s likely defensive approach. With most of their focus expected to be on containing Mohamed Salah, the former Stuttgart forward should find enough space in the final third.

Based on what he did against Bournemouth, Ekitike can be lethal when not marked tightly. On paper, his chances of scoring in a second straight match certainly look promising.
