Wolverhampton vs Manchester City Preview and Team News

Wolverhampton Team News

It’s no secret that Wolverhampton aren’t in their best shape to face the start of the 2025-26 Premier League season. The Molineux outfit have lost several key players, such as Matheus Cunha and Rayan Aït-Nouri, and failed to replace them properly.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Wolves struggle with the threat of relegation for the second season in a row, mainly due to their apparent lack of depth and quality.

As if the squad construction issues weren’t enough, Vítor Pereira’s men also endured a rough stretch in the preseason. They finished winless after four games, drawing at Stoke and losing to sides such as RC Lens, Celta Vigo, and Girona.

That doesn’t bode well for their chances in this tough debut against the Citizens, a team that have defeated them in each of their previous three head-to-head meetings.

Wolves are close to full strength ahead of this match, with the only injury casualties being two fringe players, Enso Gonzalez and Leon Chiwome

Wolverhampton aren’t expected to make drastic tactical changes, but it remains to be seen how their three-man centre-back line will adjust against City’s width and pace on the flanks. Tactically, this isn’t the ideal matchup for Wolves, especially considering all their preseason struggles.

Wolverhampton predicted lineup vs Manchester City (3-4-2-1): Jose Sá; Agbadou, T. Gomes, Doherty; Hoever, André, J. Gomes, H. Bueno; Munetsi, Bellegarde; Larsen.

Manchester City Team News

Manchester City have every right to feel disappointed after exiting the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the Round of 16 at the hands of Al Hilal. They only played one friendly after that summer tournament, a 3-0 win over Palermo, but the team should be in a good position to open this league campaign with a positive result. They showed plenty of promise in the Club World Cup despite the early exit.

Manager Pep Guardiola has done an excellent job of rebuilding his side with an injection of young talent. The Citizens acquired Rayan Aït-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, and Rayan Cherki before the Club World Cup.

The Etihad Stadium outfit have one of the deepest squads in the competition, and they should demonstrate that as they open the 2025-26 season with a few injury concerns.

Phil Foden will be a game-time call with a knock, while Rodri and Mateo Kovacic aren’t expected to be available in midfield. Claudio Echeverri could leave the club before the end of the transfer market. Despite some of those absences, City should field a very strong XI in this opener. Expect Erling Haaland, Rúben Dias, Éderson, and all their star players to feature in this trip to Molineux.

Manchester City predicted lineup vs Wolverhampton (4-2-3-1): Éderson; Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, Aït-Nouri; Silva, Reijnders; Marmoush, Cherki, Doku; Haaland.

Wolverhampton vs Manchester City Prediction, Odds

Wolverhampton seem bound to struggle in this 2025-26 Premier League opener. They don’t have the depth or the quality to go toe-to-toe with Man City, and playing with three at the back could prove to be a disastrous move from a tactical perspective.

Despite playing at home, Wolves don’t appear to have enough ideas or quality to pose a challenge against City.

The hosts’ own struggles, as well as the Citizens’ impressive collection of attacking power and creativity, should be enough to convince you that Guardiola will lead his side to a victory. City are expected to win by two or more goals, something they’ve achieved in three of their previous five Premier League games played at this venue.

Wolverhampton vs Manchester City Betting Tip

Manchester’s status as a heavy odds-on favourite for this match shouldn’t be surprising. They have enough firepower to score multiple goals, especially against a subpar defence such as Wolves’ one. That means it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if the game ends up being a high-scoring affair.

Each of the last five Manchester City trips to Molineux has ended with at least three goals in total, and three of those have surpassed the 3.5-goal mark. Given the visitors’ need to open the campaign with a strong result, their attacking power, headlined by the goalscoring threat of Haaland, and Wolves’ projected defensive woes, that high-scoring outcome could very well end up happening.
