Aston Villa are far from being a finished product when it comes to their squad construction for the 2025-26 season. 

All things considered, though, the Midlands club have managed to maintain their core that finished sixth last term. However, there are rumours about potential departures of names such as Emiliano Martínez and John McGinn, as well as Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins.

In an effort to bolster their depth in the final third, Villa have added Evann Guessand from Nice and are reportedly in the market for at least two more signings. If their preseason numbers are anything to go by, then the team could use a bit more depth across the board. 

They’ve only won three of their eight friendly matches and posted an uneven W3, D2, L3 record – hardly the kind of preparation to please Unai Emery.

The Villains won’t be at full strength for this season opener. Martínez is suspended, meaning Marco Bizot should get the nod between the posts in what will be his competitive debut with the club after signing from Brest in the summer. Morgan Rogers is doubtful due to an ankle injury, but the latest reports have been optimistic. The attacking midfielder is expected to be available for this season opener.

Newcastle United have grabbed tons of headlines throughout the preseason, but most of them for the wrong reasons. The Magpies have lost several transfer battles over the last few weeks and failed to sign several of their targets. They struck out on landing Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Šeško, and João Pedro, and it’s unclear whether they’ll manage to bring in Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.

On top of that, Alexander Isak’s future is up in the air. The Swedish forward hasn’t taken part in preseason, as he’s trying to force a move to Liverpool, but the club have repeatedly denied him that possibility. 

Tension is clearly brewing in the Toon camp, and going winless during the preseason hasn’t exactly eased the pressure on Eddie Howe’s shoulders.

For the upcoming match, Isak (transfer rumours) and Joe Willock (calf) will be unavailable, while Anthony Gordon is a heavy doubt after sustaining an ankle injury against Atlético Madrid. The tactical approach is also uncertain, as it’s unclear whether Howe will stick with the back four or continue experimenting with a 3-5-2 approach as he did last season.

It’s fair to say neither Aston Villa nor Newcastle United are in top shape ahead of this season opener. Both clubs have struggled to land their preferred targets in the transfer market and could be on the verge of losing key players. As if that wasn’t enough, the preseason performances didn’t do much to ease the burden on either Unai Emery or Eddie Howe.

However, Aston Villa have a slight edge and should have enough in them to come out on top. 

The absence of Martínez between the posts might have a significant impact, but Newcastle could be down their two best attacking players in Isak and Gordon. The Magpies don’t have quality replacements for either player, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the Isak situation affects the team’s morale as a whole.

Ultimately, this fixture could be decided by small details, as these two squads are fairly evenly matched. Aside from having an edge in terms of personnel and depth, Villa also have the advantage of playing at home, where they’ve won their last eight competitive matches across all competitions. The game could become a back-and-forth contest, but Emery’s side are expected to come away with the victory.
