The Oilers couldn’t have asked for a better opponent on Opening Night of the 2026-27 NHL regular season than the Canucks, who ranked among the worst in the league in most metrics.

Edmonton endured a disappointing playoff run, losing in the first round to the Anaheim Ducks, though they were one of the best teams in the Western Conference during the regular season. They ranked first in the league in power-play percentage (30.6%) and sixth in goals scored per game (3.44), suggesting their offence is what carried them into the playoffs.

As for the Canucks, they finished dead last in penalty-killing percentage (71.5%) and in goals allowed per game (3.83), meaning their defence was a cause for concern. Their attack wasn’t any better, however, and despite a decent power-play unit, they were the third-worst NHL team in goals scored per game (2.56) during the 2025-26 regular season.

The goaltending matchup will feature Edmonton’s Tristan Jarry and Vancouver’s Kevin Lankinen. Jarry went 9-6-2 with a career-worst 3.86 GAA in 19 regular-season appearances with the Oilers following his trade from Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Lankinen went 11-27-5 with a 3.70 GAA and an .875 save percentage in 47 starts during the 2025-26 regular season.

The statistical gap between these two sides is significant. Record aside, the Oilers’ attack should be enough to carry them to victory against a Canucks defence that’s not expected to improve much in 2026-27.

Even though Connor McDavid should be the focal point of the Oilers’ offence, the Canucks are likely to devote significant defensive attention to him. And with McDavid being an elite playmaker, that should open up space for the other forwards on the roster to take advantage of those opportunities.

With Draisaitl expected to skate on the first line alongside McDavid, and given that he’s coming off a 35-goal, 97-point season despite playing in just 65 regular-season contests, he’s a strong candidate to find the back of the net here.

The Oilers are favourites to open the 2026-27 season with a win, but I’m backing them to cover the 1.5 puck line as well, as they should deliver a dominant performance at home against one of the weakest defences in the NHL. Edmonton covered the -1.5 spread in three of their four regular-season meetings with the Canucks last season.

This game should go over 5.5 goals, as three of their four regular-season clashes in 2025-26 hit that line, and both teams ranked in the bottom 10 in goals allowed per game last season.

Lastly, I’m backing McDavid to record at least four shots. The star playmaker should be the focal point of the Oilers’ offence after averaging 3.73 shots per game during the 2025-26 campaign.

The Oilers are missing several players for Opening Night. The list includes three forwards, Jason Dickinson, Mattias Janmark, and Matt Savoie, as well as goaltender Frederik Andersen and defenceman Alec Regula. Regula and Janmark are expected back in early October, while the remaining trio is expected back in the coming weeks.

Edmonton will have their star duo of McDavid and Draisaitl leading the attack, with both expected to skate together on the first line. McDavid should roam through the middle, with Draisaitl operating on the left wing and Vasily Podkolzin on the right. It isn’t expected to be serious, however, and he’s expected back on the ice in early October. The same can’t be said about Thatcher Demko, as the goaltender is sidelined with a hip injury and won’t be back until around Christmas in a best-case scenario.

Jake DeBrusk, likely to be a key offensive contributor for the Canucks while skating on the first line, will be available for Opening Night. The winger has been dealing with a lower-body injury, but the latest reports suggest he’ll be available. DeBrusk scored 23 goals last season and should skate on the first line alongside Elias Pettersson and Jonathan Lekkerimaki.
