The Hurricanes and the Golden Knights will square off in Game 1 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Finals on Tuesday, and these have arguably been the two best teams throughout the playoffs.

Carolina cruised through the Eastern Conference with a 12-1 record over the first three rounds, while Vegas made a statement in the Western Conference Finals by sweeping the Colorado Avalanche.

It’s hard to overlook what the Hurricanes can do at home. Although they dropped the series opener against the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Finals, that remains their lone defeat since the beginning of April.

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights have gone 7-3 in their last 10 games on the road, including a 4-1 record in the playoffs.

One area where the Hurricanes hold a massive edge is in goal, as Frederik Andersen has been the best netminder in the postseason by a wide margin. He’s posted a 1.41 GAA, a .931 save percentage, and a 12-1 record in 13 playoff appearances. The Golden Knights are expected to counter with Carter Hart, who has recorded a 2.22 GAA and a .922 save percentage in 16 outings (W12, L4).

That said, Vegas should put up a fight, as they have the second-best offence in the postseason with 3.63 goals scored per game. However, they haven’t faced a defence as good as the Hurricanes’, and Carolina have also been nearly unstoppable at home.

They will rely on their elite goaltending and defence to get the win in what shapes up to be a closely contested clash.

If the Hurricanes are going to come out on top in this series opener, they’ll need a strong performance from Logan Stankoven. The young forward has been one of their best players in the current playoff run and has notched a team-high nine goals in 13 appearances.

He has been on the rise lately and scored in each of the last two clashes against the Canadiens, including a three-point performance in the series-clinching Game 5 win. Look for Stankoven to be heavily involved offensively against the Golden Knights.

Both the Golden Knights and Hurricanes have proven that they can go head-to-head against some of the NHL’s top offensive teams. However, they’ve also been dominant defensively.

Even if the goal total stays in the under, expect some of the top playmakers from both clubs to be heavily involved here.

Taylor Hall ranks third in shots on goal for the Hurricanes in the postseason with 37, averaging 2.84 per game. He has also recorded at least three shots in five of his last eight appearances, including a playoff-high seven shots on May 25 against Montreal.

For the Golden Knights, Pavel Dorofeyev remains one of the team’s most dangerous offensive weapons, as he co-leads Vegas in shots on goal with 42 in the playoffs, while also scoring 10 times.

The winger has recorded at least two shots on goal in each of his last seven outings and averaged 2.5 in the Western Finals against Colorado. Given his consistent offensive involvement, he should have a strong floor to clear this line.
