The Maple Leafs have been slumping badly of late and enter this game on a six-game losing streak following their recent 5-2 defeat to the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. 

The defensive woes have been the biggest problem for Toronto of late, as they’ve allowed at least four goals in each of their previous four defeats.

Those bad results would be an issue against almost any team in the league, but they’ll have the opportunity to bounce back against one of the worst teams in the Western Conference, the Canucks. 

Vancouver is coming off a 2-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks the last time out, but it’s hard to trust them since they’ve lost eight of their previous 10 games overall (W2, L8).

This battle between two struggling units will probably be decided by which team has the best offense. With the Maple Leafs scoring 3.26 goals per game, the 12th-best mark in the NHL, as opposed to the Canucks’ 2.57 (30th), Toronto should be able to win here.

Auston Matthews hasn’t been at his best of late and has gone pointless in four of his last five games. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the star center is one of the most productive players on the Maple Leafs roster. 

Despite his recent slump, he still has notched 11 goals and 18 total points in 15 January outings. He should take advantage of the Canucks’ defensive woes to boost that tally in this contest.

Our three-leg parlay suggests this is going to be a high-scoring matchup. The previous meeting between these two clubs ended in a 5-0 win for Toronto, and the possibility of another high-scoring contest lies in the fact that both teams are among the league’s worst defensive clubs. 

The Canucks rank dead last in goals allowed per game (3.61), while Toronto is the third-worst team in that regard (30th, 3.46).

The possibility of a high-scoring contest is directly tied to the possibility of two of the most productive players on each team being able to crack the scoresheet. 

Jake DeBrusk has been one of the few bright spots for the Canucks of late and has racked up five assists and six total points over his last five outings. DeBrusk ranks second on the Canucks’ roster with 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists).

The same can be said about Max Domi and the Maple Leafs. Even though other players have posted better season-long numbers, Domi has been playing well in what has been a rather unproductive stretch for the Maple Leafs. 

Domi ranks fifth in Toronto’s roster with 29 points in 52 contests, although most of his contributions have come as a playmaker (eight goals, 21 assists). He has four helpers in his last five games.

The Maple Leafs are slowly trending toward being at full strength for this contest and could have two big returns for Saturday’s matchup in William Nylander and Chris Tanev. 

Nylander has been sidelined due to a groin injury, but he’ll be evaluated before Saturday’s contest to determine whether he can play.

The same goes for Tanev (groin), although it’s worth noting that his influence isn’t as big as Nylander’s since the Swedish forward leads the team in points so far. The lone injury casualty for the Maple Leafs outside of that duo is winger Dakota Joshua, who will be out throughout the Olympic break due to an upper-body injury.

Vancouver Canucks Team News

The Canucks will evaluate Nils Hoglander’s availability for this matchup due to a lower-body injury. 

A decision on his status will be made closer to Saturday’s contest. They have several other players ruled out due to fitness issues, but neither will be ready to return to the ice on Saturday.

The list includes Brock Boeser (concussion), Zeev Buium (face), Marco Rossi (lower body), Guillaume Brisebois (lower body) and Derek Forbort (undisclosed), with all of them being ready to return between early February and early March. The lone player ruled out for the rest of the season is goaltender Thatcher Demko, who’s out with a hip problem.
