Cool guys, tricky card games, expensive whisky, lonesome riders, pretty maidens and wild-wild West. Before the secret agent James Bond has started to play poker in a posh casino, this game had an important role in the Old West played by ruthless cowboys. In a time of gold fever, the different card games were an inseparable attribute of all saloons and nobody was afraid to get in troubles. Oh, what an era!
Sounds cool and quite nostalgic? Well, we are not able to travel back in time, unfortunately, but we can share an amazing collection of the greatest western movies about poker and that’s kind of the same thing! So, here is your plan for tonight: invite friends, choose the movie from our list and get inspired for your own game.
1. MAVERICK (1994) The winner!
You cannot find a better or more excited western movie about poker than this. The duo of Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster is just simply enchanting. The storyline is typical, but it will never fall out of fashion. Bret Maverick, a weasel poker player, is playing in a huge poker tournament together with coquettish and beautiful Mrs Annabelle Bransford.
Yes, the game of poker is twisted with a love story, but don’t forget everything happens in Old West, so adventures, risk and danger are not forgotten. The highlight of the movie is a massive scene of intense final round and Mel Gibson wins the game with a royal flush. What a big surprise, huh?
Of course, there is a whole bunch of truly unrealistic and ridiculous scenes from the great inadequacies in poker rules to the most foolish decisions. It will be the most irritational poker game you’ll ever see but you will enjoy the old beautiful ways of bluffing with no doubts. And in the end, it is a comedy that is supposed to make you laugh, so don’t take it too seriously and better don’t try those tricks in your game.
THE BEST QUOTE:
Zane Cooper: Well, Bret, you know what we ended up with? A half a million-dollar silk shirt.
Maverick: Nope, we ended up with a quarter million-dollar silk shirt, because my old pappy always used to say, "Don't put the chicken in front of"... no, wait "Never cut the cards before"... no, wait, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket", eh whatever.
2. TOMBSTONE (1993) The movie of action and moustaches.
This movie is more typical Western one with some bad and good guys. The action will drag you in from the beginning and the old wolves of Hollywood Val Kilmer, Kurt Russell and Sam Elliott will prove why they are so famous.
The storyline is quite simple: Wyatt Earp and his brothers want to settle down and start a business. The old days of guns and gang might be left behind. And here the Western action starts: if brothers are not looking for troubles, the trouble finds them. The local gang of cowboys starts fighting with them. Two gangs, lots of fighting, who will stay alive?
But in the end, it is not just about the guns – the 36 hours marathon of cards game is the key point of this movie. You cannot find any other as iconic scene as in this movie with cowboys playing poker. It is just amazing!
THE BEST QUOTE:
Wyatt Earp: How many cards do you want?
Doc Holliday: I don't want to play anymore.
Wyatt Earp: How many?
Doc Holliday: Damn it, you're the most fallible, stubborn, self-deluded, bull-headed man I've ever known in my entire life.
3. A BIG HAND FOR THE LITTLE LADY (1966) Classic.
The only thing that might be said about this movie is “Old but gold“. Poker is the main storyline of this movie and a love story or jokes are just wrapped around the game. Everything is focused on the high stakes and no-limit game played by the five main characters. Don’t expect it to be very active as all those modern action movies, but the end will be twisted and surprising.
The masters and enthusiasts of poker will be satisfied how correctly the game is played. Sure, some rules have been changed since then, but most of the scenes are unquestionably realistic. The strategies of bluffing are so persuasive as well, that the beginners can even learn something useful. A random and interesting fact: the movie was renamed and released as Big Deal at Dodge City in the UK.
THE BEST QUOTE:
Dennis Wilcox: Now look, mister, the first rule of the game of poker, whether you're playing eastern or western rules, or the kind they play at the North Pole, is put up or shut up!
4. THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (2016) The modern one.
The game of poker is not a key point in this movie, but we cannot miss this one sweet cherry because it is an amazing modern Western movie with the brightest stars of this century – Chris Pratt, Haley Bennet and Denzel Washington.
The bad guys, nice decorations and more heated fights – this movie has it all. But why we put it on this list? Well, just because of one amusing scene where you’ll see an absolutely cool card trick. It might be helpful someday!

Billy Rocks: What did your daddy say?
Goodnight Robicheaux: My daddy said a lot of things!
