-A A +A

I am sure that many of you have heard of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by now. For those who are not yet familiar with this term, here’s a short definition – it is the development of computers that can think as intelligent human beings.

Some are positive about AI and seeing it as an important development. Others are more dramatic and envisioning AI destroying the humankind. You know, like in those fantasy books.

Our ancestors probably didn’t have the slightest idea that in the future computers will be smarter than humans. However, in the 21st century, everything seems possible. So, what does AI mean for us, gamblers?

AI knows you better than you think

Some of the online casinos are implementing AI to forecasts customers’ behavior. AI can track your moves and get to know you in a way you couldn’t have imagined. It can tell what motivates you, makes you quit or change games. This information allows casinos to adopt best practices and keep customers wanting more and coming back.

AI computer machines can even catch the cheaters! Naturally, more and more online casinos will implement AI to optimize the costs and eliminate the cheaters. AI’s data analytics and machine learning capabilities can be easily applied to root out the unwanted from the online casinos. So, no more lucky days for cheaters out there – AI has online casinos covered.

Player vs. Machine

If you are curious enough, you can test your poker skills with a super-intelligent robot. But be aware that its appearance has nothing on its intelligence. It even has a name – Libratus. It sounds like from sci-fi movies, doesn’t it?

Last year, 4 world-famous poker professionals were challenged to play against Libratus in the “Brains Vs. Artificial Intelligence: Upping the Ante” tournament.

For everyone’s surprise, the computer defeated the four invincible poker players - Jason Les, Dong Kim, Daniel McAulay, and Jimmy Chou. During the 20 days of playing in Pittsburgh, USA, Libratus won against its four human competitors and had 1,766,250 $ in chips at the end of the tournament.

This incredible invention was made by Tuomas Sandholm, a professor of the Carnegie Mellon University, and a grad student Noam Brown. A couple of years ago, these two geniuses challenged players with a similar AI robot, however, luck wasn’t on their side that time. It took Tuomas and Noam two years to enhance this masterpiece and we can all admit that it’s brilliant!

So, how is it possible for a robot to top human players in the game of Texas Hold’em? This poker game relies heavily on betting strategy and game theory, not to mention bluffing and the cards dealt. Libratus has it all to win against humans in the game of poker.

All four poker stars claimed that Libratus learned from each mistake they made and exploited it in the next round. The AI machine is programmed in a way to enhance and improve its technique with every game. It knows when to bluff and when to bet low with good cards. Thus, it’s basically impossible to win against Libratus. But who knows, perhaps we do have some incredibly talented poker professionals out there, who can outsmart the invincible Libratus?

This only proves how well advanced the AI technology is. Let’s hope that we won‘t have to witness an apocalypse by robots in the future.
