2025 US Open – when and where?

The US Open will be hosted at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre, which is in Queens, New York. The venue is most frequently referred to simply as Flushing Meadows, which is the name of the park where the complex is situated.

The hard-court-surface venue has been the home of the US Open Grand Slam since 1978, and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre is a sprawling and impressive modern tennis complex.

The Arthur Ashe Stadium is the main court, one of 22 within the complex, and in the adjoining park there are a further 12 courts. While it is home to the US Open and the Junior US Open, the complex is also open to the public for play for most of the year.

The Arthur Ashe Stadium is also the largest tennis arena in the world, with a phenomenal capacity of 23,200. For context, Centre Court at Wimbledon holds just under 15,000 people.

2025 mixed doubles twist

The Grand Slam action at the US Open has a new twist this year, because of a new two-day mixed doubles event taking place on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th August. This moves the new format into the heart of the popular US Open ‘Fan Week’ and is part of the build-up to the main action.

The newly formatted mixed doubles competition has a $1m prize and will feature 16 teams. However, the new format hasn’t been widely accepted, and even reigning mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori have criticised it.

As the tournament now doesn’t coincide with the main singles draws, it has become less about specialist mixed doubles teams and instead is populated by high-ranking singles players forming new partnerships, such as Emma Navarro and Jannik Sinner, Jack Draper and Paula Badosa, and Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz.

Entries for the tournament were awarded on the combined singles rankings of the duo, with the aforementioned couples among some of the early favourites.

Reigning champions

The 2024 US Open finals ended up being about high American hopes falling flat. This began with the women’s final, which saw home US talent Jessica Pegula up against the powerful Aryna Sabalenka. It was a superb match, with drama and intensity on a knife edge.

Sabalenka clinched a narrow first set before Pegula went up through the gears, rattling off five games in a row to put herself within touching distance of winning the second set. However, Sabalenka dug deep, backed her power game, and recovered from 5-4 down to win the set 7-5 and take the match.

The home crowd were hoping for a turnaround of fortunes in the men’s final the following day, as American Taylor Fritz made his first Grand Slam final appearance. However, the partisan crowd in New York fell completely flat, as Jannik Sinner crushed Fritz in straight sets.

Fun fact: In winning the 2024 US Open, Sinner became just the fourth man ever to win both hard-court Grand Slams in the same year (Australian Open and US Open), joining Mats Wilander, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Men’s singles favourites

Reigning champion Jannik Sinner is the 1.99 outright favourite in pre-tournament 2025 US Open odds. Sinner has been to the final of each of the other three Grand Slams this year, claiming the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while conceding the French Open Final in dramatic fashion to big rival Carlos Alcaraz. Given that three of his five career Grand Slam titles have come on the hard court, Sinner’s form and presence are hard to ignore.

Fun fact: No player has successfully defended a US Open men’s title since Roger Federer in 2008.

Can Alcaraz deny Sinner?

Carlos Alcaraz will be the one expected to push the world number one, Sinner, to his limits. A Sinner vs Alcaraz US Open final wouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone, and if it happens, it will be the third Grand Slam final they will have contested this year.

The Spanish youngster has a complete game, and he’s a crowd favourite because he’s passionate and innovative on the court, the polar opposite of the cool, composed and reserved Sinner.

Alcaraz is a former US Open title winner, as his maiden Slam title came in 2022 at Flushing Meadows when he beat Casper Ruud. He’s 2.7 odds quote to repeat that, but since that 2022 title, the Spaniard has lost in the US Open semi-finals and had a second-round crash at last year’s tournament, so he has had some struggles.

Interestingly, Alcaraz has also never been beyond the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, the only other hard-court Slam. This means that four of his five career Slam titles have been split between clay and grass, indicating that he concedes favouritism to Sinner, a much stronger hard-court player.

Is Djokovic a danger?

Novak Djokovic is a four-time US Open winner, with the most recent of those happening for him in 2023. However, the days of Grand Slam dominance from Djokovic have long gone, and the Serbian hasn’t won a Slam title since that 2023 success at Flushing Meadows. To his credit, he’s still the 9.0 third favourite, having reached the semi-finals of each of this year’s Slams, but getting beyond that step is becoming increasingly challenging for him, it would seem.

The chasing pack

Britain’s 15.0 big shot in tennis betting, Jack Draper, could also be a contender as he goes in search of his maiden Slam success. Draper reached a career high rank of fourth in the world earlier this year, and the 23-year-old will be keen to shake off an early Wimbledon exit on his last Slam outing. Draper won the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells title earlier this year, but his wonderful semi-final berth at Flushing Meadows last year remains his only trip beyond the fourth round of a Slam.

Germany’s Alexander Zverev also remains on a quest to secure his first career Slam title. Last year’s runner-up, Taylor Fritz, along with US compatriot Ben Shelton, who met recently in the semi-finals of the Toronto Masters 1000, will carry the hopes of a US champion being produced, both from a pre-tournament quote of 25.0.

Women’s singles favourites

Aryna Sabalenka is the pre-tournament favourite at 3.4 odds ahead of this year’s US Open challenge. She is the one tasked with holding on to the title she powerfully earned 12 months ago, and it has been another strong year for the world number one. However, the one thing that has eluded her in 2025 is another Grand Slam title.

Sabalenka lost in the finals of the Australian Open and French Open before falling in the semi-finals at Wimbledon. Will she end this Slam drought she’s been on since Flushing Meadows last autumn? Sabalenka has reached at least the final four in each of her last four appearances at the US Open and will be expected to go close. All three of her career Slams have been earned on hard-court surfaces.

Another Świątek surprise?

Iga Świątek sprang a surprise at Wimbledon earlier this year by winning the title. The former world number one had had a disappointing year up until that point, including on clay, where she had been so dominant for the past few seasons. She defied some longer odds to get that Wimbledon title, but it put her back in the spotlight as the 4.0 odds second favourite for this year’s US Open crown, an achievement she previously claimed in 2022.

Former champion Gauff

At 5.74 odds, the 2023 champion Coco Gauff won’t be short on support from fans and punters when she steps out at Flushing Meadows. Her overall record at the Slam isn’t great, however, having only made it past the fourth round on two of her six previous entries into the draw. Gauff fell at the fourth round in last year’s title defence and has had a mixed year in the 2025 Slams.

Mirra Andreeva is trading strongly for her breakthrough Grand Slam success at an 8.0 quote to win outright. She’s a powerful, talented youngster with all the right tools to become a champion, and while the 18-year-old has no record to speak of at Flushing Meadows, that won’t stop her on-court confidence from shining through.

There are some wonderful dark horses in the field. Elena Rybakina is the pick of those at 12.0 odds, a player capable of taking down the best in the world, but her worst Grand Slam record is at the US Open. China’s Qinwen Zheng is a competitive, aggressive player who is capable of big things, while Amanada Anisimova (15.0) and Jess Pegula (22.0) could receive that extra boost from playing in front of home crowds.
