Whether it’s football, hockey, rugby, basketball or otherwise, there will always be lots of opportunities for both teams in a match to score. Most of the time, it’s easy to assume that betting on team sports just consists of straight wagers on outcomes and final scores. However, over the years, betting providers such as Tonybet have come up with new ways for punters to interact with their favourite sports.

One of the most popular ‘side’ or ‘alternative’ wagers is the Both Teams To Score (BTTS) bet, which takes you away from having to predict a specific team to win outright. It’s considered a niche bet that can carry longer odds than the usual straight markets, but this will always differ depending on the sport, the teams in play, and the form they’ve shown over the past season.

In this guide, we take you through:

So, before you start betting, let’s see what BTTS markets are really all about.

What is a BTTS bet?

A BTTS bet is a wager you place when you predict that both teams in a specific match will score. The scoreline doesn’t have to be specific, and either side can win, for this bet to convert. What does need to happen, however, is for both teams to get points on the board in one way or another.

On the other hand, you can also bet that this condition won’t be met, meaning that either no teams score, or that only one team gets points on the scoreboard. Essentially, you can bet on or against a match being a fair fight!

Usually, you’ll find that BTTS bets are set up as ‘yes’ or ‘no’ conditions. This means that you’ll normally see ‘Both Teams To Score’ followed by odds for either the answer of yes or no – and you decide on what the likely outcome will be.

Let’s explore an example. Let’s say that there’s an upcoming football match between Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians. While the odds might be in Shamrock’s favour to win outright, this doesn’t mean that Bohemians won’t give them a run for their money.

You’d be presented with this selection if you want to make a BTTS bet:

If you pick ‘YES’ to the BTTS market, both Shamrock and Bohemians will need to score one goal each. If you pick ‘NO’, on the other hand, you will convert on this bet if, for example:

Provided that the match is a one-sided affair, a ‘NO’ bet on the BTTS market will convert.

In some cases, you may also be able to narrow this bet down to BTTS in both halves of a match, or to combine it with a specific match result or an over/under market. Combining bets in this way will usually push the odds further, meaning that there is less chance of all these events happening together.

If you’re new to BTTS betting, we recommend taking things slowly. Rushing into an extended BTTS bet or setting up an accumulator is not ideal for beginners. That said, we recommend that all our customers bet responsibly, regardless of how many years of punting you have behind you. If you ever need help managing your betting activities, Tonybet is on hand.

BTTS betting strategies

As briefly mentioned, there are a few ways to bet on both teams scoring in lots of different sports. In some cases, you may wish to combine your BTTS bet(s) with others to create the following:

If you prefer, you can, of course, keep to a standard BTTS only bet – the choice is yours!

Many punters choose to place BTTS bets on sports, leagues and matches where there is likely to be world-class talent – and where there are more likely to be big scorelines. For example, consider betting on the best of the best in the UEFA Champions League, the Bundesliga, or the Eredivisie.

In fact, other bettors choose international sports markets for BTTS bets because of the high stakes involved – for example, consider Six Nations rugby or the football World Cup finals. The further along you are in a competition, the more likely it is that the best players will still be on the board.

It’s just one way of reasoning whether or not a BTTS bet is worth making. Of course, there are never any guarantees in sports betting, which is why it’s so important to choose a reputable odds setter and sportsbook such as Tonybet.

As with other types of betting, there are some strategies that punters use to try to make the most of BTTS markets. Here are a few of the more popular ones, but do note again that there are no guarantees – and that using betting strategies will always carry risks.
